Some people simply can't tell the difference between labor and other bodily functions like gas, cramps, a simple stomach ache. If it was her first baby, then perhaps she didn't honestly think she was in labor.
That's not backwater. I'm pretty sure that it happens everywhere. You just don't get to the hospital in time...
Uh, I know about this situation. She wasn't sure she was in labor. They told her to come in and she started to come in and delivered in the car. She didn't deliver in the car to be on TV. Plus, she wasn't from Muncie. She was from a town surrounding Muncie. So, it took longer to get here than they originally thought it would.

A lot of the smaller towns do not have hospitals.
I know Jay County has one and Blackford but other than that there is Ball.
Not sure if Muncie has any other than Ball Memorial.
I just moved to Indiana and we live in a town that is 45+ minutes away and there is not a hospital between this town and Muncie.
Also, if you are high risk the doctors require you to go to Muncie because most of the other hospitals can't handle high risk pregnany and the specialist is in Muncie.
Although when I saw that episode I was pretty sure that was like one of those birthing centers.
If you don't have much to begin with, then you don't have much to lose.
Yeah I think she was actually on her way to the birthing center on (I believe) Jackson.
I could always be wrong, but that is what it appeared like.
