The Sets

Glad to see Montalbano back on BBC4 on Saturdays. I love the show but what I particularly enjoy are the fantastic apartments used in the show. Great lofty ceilings, beautiful staircases often with wrought iron bannisters, lovely sunny courtyards in the middle of the house. Sicilian architecture appears to be very gracious and is a pleasure to behold.

Pick a Sicilian town at random on Street View, and have a look!

Whilst there are undoubtedly many examples of striking architecture, lots of the buildings appear to be scruffy and run down, in some cases concrete monstrosities that look close to collapse! That building opposite Montalbano's house is a perfect example of one of those concrete eyesores I mention!

Cool, thanks for that.So they clear the beach when they are filming the show? I thought it was very luxurious for someones private beach. Another thing, in those raging hot temperatures all the guys wear leather jackets, shirts & ties. Dont they ever feel over dressed?

reply

They film the series in December and Jan when the beaches are empty.

Temps are relative!

A Ha!!! Still a great show though. Thanks for your input.

I am sure some seem to be filmed in summer

the one where Montalbano dreams at the beginning of that coffin in the quarry did seem like it was summer due to the sun position

His house is in Punta Secca

Ah, that "concrete eyesore" is a typical watch tower shape and might well be several centuries older than Montalbano's apartment.

Just returned from Sampieri Sicily and the surrounding towns and saw most of the places used in the show. Ragusa ibla is one of the most used especially around the Duamo. They hop from town to town as if they are one place. We had lunch outside the police station which is in scicli on a pedestrian only street. They also use the jail in Noto.
There are Montalbano tours if you ever visit. It's fun to watch the show and see all they placed we have visited.
