an amazing film more like it?

Having just watched flame and citron i was blown away by it, having seen the trailers i thought looked good so went out and bought the dvd but was not expecting it to be so good, i found the film woderfully pieced together and kept me interested throughout but i also loved the historic aspect to it and makes yeh think how many other stories are there like this that ive never heard off, So was wondering could ppl recommend any similar movies? Thank You.

There had been a couple of recent movies dealing with resistance against Nazis: "Black Book" and "Max Manus: Man of War". The latter is the one with more similarities to "Flame and Citron".

They are good and entertaining, but I must concede that Flame and Citron is much better, so I don't know if you will enjoy them the same.

I love movies about the Resistance. Try Jean-Pierre Melville's Army of Shadows, Gillian Armstrong's Charlotte Gray, Marc Rothemund's Sophie Scholl: The Final Days, Jean Renoir's This Land Is Mine and Roberto Rossellini's Open City. There's also Marcel Ophuls's great documentary, The Sorrow And The Pity.

Some great recomendations, Max manus is brilliant, Army Of Shadows an absolute classic.... Don't forget Frankenheimers The Train too (still as fresh as ever), and oldies like Carve Her Name With Pride and Hangmen Also Die....... Of course for the definitive story of the french resistance you should get any of the Allo Allo boxsets!...........

I was recently blown away by a "citizen uprising" film about WWII resistance to the Germans called Le quattro giornate di Napoli/The Four Days of Naples (1962).

Not easy to track down in the U.S., but occasionally Turner Classic Movies plays it on tv.

Let us not forget "Operation Daybreak" and "Soldier of Orange" both are spectacular. The former is hard to track on DVD, but I think there's some Korean imports.

A couple more comes to mind like "Les Miserables" (the one with Jean-Paul Belmundo) adapted from the novel but set in Word War II occupied France. Then there's "Le Petite Garcon" (not sure if my spelling is right); but this one is also a pretty interesting war film set against Nazi occupied France.

"Man Hunt" (UK film) is also a World War II thriller, the DVD was released early in 2009. "Shining Through" (the one with Michael Douglas) is also pretty good if not a little Hollywoodish.

And there's the recent "Defiance" with Daniel Craig.

Defiance with Daniel Craig has a documentary on the dvd introducing you to the people it was based on. They were partisans in the forests of Belorussia. The two surviving brothers moved to the US and raised their families after surviving the war.

Excellent suggestions from last year/ I particularly recommend Soldier of Orange, about the Dutch resistance. It's the closest I've seen to Flame and Citron. It stars a young Rutger Hauer, before he sold out to Hollywood.

reply

Glad you mentioned Soldier of Orange. It was excellent. Haven't seen it in years. Am wondering how to find a copy to rent so I could see it again.

The other really good WWII resistance movie I've seen was The Army of Shadows.

The Last Metro was also very good although it's not really a "Resistance" movie -- but it does give a good picture of life under the German Occupation and it is a beautiful movie.

"THE LIVES OF OTHERS"!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well - if you're browsing Netflix and found this movie - as I did and loved it you might like The Odessa File with Jon Voight - EXCELLENT and very suspenseful and the end ... you just cannot get any better than that!!

"Quillermemo" and Frank Sinatra's "The Naked Runner" are also great movies. Von Ryan's express a bit campy is a good one too.

As a couple of people have already said, The Army of Shadows. It is THE absolute classic about the Resistance. Also, the recent film, quite an homage to that one, The Army of Crime (stupid choice for a title), isn't bad. Female Agents was quite good, about French women who joined SOE and fought, quite heavy going though. The Train is another fantastic film, less dark and morose than the others I mentioned, but an absolute classic.

reply

I completely agree! This film is brilliant! Wow..mesmerizing..riveting..to the end.

Though a 2008 production, it beats anything this year that I've seen at least. Social Network and Animal Kingdom were BORING..weak.

For anyone looking for a similar, brillantly executed, well-acted film about resistance: THE LIVES OF OTHERS. Love that film.

Best,

Defiance was excellent! If you are a fan of spy films I highly recommend A Perfect Spy, Tinker Tailer Soldier Spy, and Reilly: Ace of Spies and The Spy Came In From The Cold. All were brilliant.
