This movie is based on The Redemption of Sarah Cain by Beverly Lewis. In fact, if you go to BL's author website she has posted pictures of her visit to the set when they were filming. The synopsis of the movie hints at some differences between the book and the film, but as long as the movie retains the integrity and message of Beverly's story, I'll be happy. My guess is that if Beverly visited the set, she has read the script and must endorse the film.

If this movie is based on Beverly Lewis' "The Redemption of Sarah Cain" they seem to have taken quite a few "artisitc liberties" with it.

1) Sarah Cain was a former schoolteacher-turned-real estate agent. The "hot-shot" part is correct.

2) Sarah did not go to her sister's funeral--she didn't know Ivy died until Lyddie calls her.

3) She moves to Lancaster right away, to try to get Miriam to take the kids. She never takes the kids to Portland.

Considering that Beverly Lewis was on the set, and had some "doings" with the movie--I'm surprised she let the plot get changed so much. I was kind of excited about this movie coming out, but now, after having read this plot summary, I'm not so sure about it.

I love Beverly's books--I own all of them--The Amish are a people I have much respect for. I'd even go Amish myself--(New Order--I like my electricity too much!) But one thing that bothers me about her books is they can get kinda "preachy." In addition, she really slams on the Amish practice of shunning in the "Heritage of Lancaster County" series. And the "Postcard/Crossroad" duo really slams on the sympathy healers.

Wanda Brunstetter's books can get kinda preachy, too. But, I usually skip the preachy stuff and just read their books for the story lines.

If I were to make a movie out of any of BL's books--I would have chosen "Sanctuary". THAT one was a book that I just HAD to stay up .ate and finish--I enjoyed that immensely.

To sum, I do enjoy reading about the Amish, and BL has a unique perspective on them, as her grandmother had been Old Order Mennonite. I am hoping that this movie doesn't distort her book too much.

Thank you for the opportunity to present my opinion.

Bev was actually really happy with the movie, she said it was better than the original plot, and the movie is really touching. The movie doesn't have a really big emotional scene, and I didn't really see Sarah's redemption in the book as much as the movie.

SPOILER

I didn't really see that Sarah needed to be redeemed. She just needed to accept that accidents happen and it wasn't her fault the little girl died.
