Who is the guy in Archie's story?

Near the end when the guys are in the hallway waiting, Archie is telling story about a guy with a deformed head...
I automatically thought it was a nod to the Elephant Man cos John Hurt was there.
I can't remember the point Archie was making.

Did i miss something?

Can someone clear this up?
