Why germans speaking in english?
I started to watch this movie till the point where germans of world war 2 all speaking in english, even the children. Sorry but you're doing this wrong.
shareif you want to hear them speaking in German, just watch the German version, remarkably they speak German in that.
If the concept of different languages in films is too much for you, i suggest that you are not ready to watch films, leave it a few years, then try again.

The correct answer is 2 fold. First, people are generally too lazy to watch a subtitled movie and second, it's a BBC production. ;)

shareThat is your opinion and you're welcome to it. There are some people who can't do both and it isn't laziness - they find it "takes away" from the movie or they can't concentrate on both.
I have grown up watching opera with subtitles and I LOVE foreign films. Letting a little thing like subtitles deter anyone from watching great movies like "Das Leben der Anderen" (Best Foreign Pict Oscar winner 2008) or "La Finestra di Fronte" or "Det sjunde inseglet" by Bergman, is not only sad, but a little on the pathetic side, imho. Anyone who is a TRUE fan of movies, doesn't care about the language or subtitles. To be honest, some of the best movie making in the world happens in languages other than English. I speak Spanish and some Italian, but that's such a limited scope.

In your opinion, then it should have been made in Germany, but it wouldn't have been and we both know that. The story was written by an Irish author and brought to the screen by a British company. If you read the Goofs/Trivia section, there is a perfectly valid reason that the actors don't use German language or accents. The lack of them did not detract from the movie.
shareNot really. I'm portuguese, I've been watching movies with subtitles my whole life and never had a problem with it.
The problem is that in this day and age, there are too many people (mostly, if not exclusively young people) who are too lazy to read anything at all. Of all the people who say "reading subtitles is boring and I'd rather be reading the book"... I wonder how many would read the book. Or any book at all.
And to all the ones who have no clue why the movie is in english, maybe you should read the official FAQ on IMDB before asking questions like this. I will paste it for all of you, if you have the time and patience to read this huge, exhausting text:
Because it's a British-made film with British actors (albeit filmed in Hungary). Had it been made in Hollywood it would have had American actors speaking English with American accents or fake German accents. To have the movie take place in German, the British film-makers would have had to either: 1) hire and be able to communicate with German actors, 2) teach German to the English actors, 3) have the actors use fake German accents, or 4) subtitle the movie in English. (1) and (2) would have been expensive, (3) would have been comical, if not offensive, to the audience, and (4) would drive off a large portion of the viewers who don't like reading subtitles. Film critic Roger Ebert praised the film for is use of English accents which he says conveys the class of the family which could not have been shown if any of the above methods had been used.share
Yes, really. You're comfortable watching movies with subtitles because you HAVE been watching them that way all your life. I'm sure there are more and better movies made in languages other than Portuguese. I do watch movies with subtitles, but I don't enjoy them as much. Why? Because instead of taking in the physical and facial nuances of the actors as they speak their lines or the action on the screen, I'm reading words at the bottom of the screen. And many times, most times, actually, the subtitles are written in a way real people don't actually speak.

This is not a Hollywood film. And a British film tends to feature people speaking English, funnily enough.....
shareNo, those versions are synced, which is a bit worse than people speaking the wrong language in a movie.
If everybody speaks the right language, it adds to the atmosphere of the movie.
