That they had Killed Ellen off?
In American cinema, they rarely kill off the protagonist, and this would have been the perfect show to allow it. The themes of the show were always really dark, and if Ellen had died, then everything Patty Hewes touched truly would have been collateral damage (no pun intended).

In true Damages fashion, they made us believe what they wanted us to believe. Sure it kind of felt cheap at first, but it wasn't the first time they lead us on like that.

I agree, I never really thought Ellen was going to die.
sharei didnt want ellen to die but i did want patty to finally get her comeuppance. i love patty, she has got to be one of the best characters you love to hate in a tv show and glenn close potrayed brilliantly, but i just wanted her to either die or go to prison for what she has done in 5 seasons.
the ending was brilliant, but she did deserve to get her comeuppance.
its a shame one of the best shows on tv is over. i hope it gains alot of fanbase in years to come (like the excellent 'the wire') because it deserves to be known.
I think it would have been an easy way out for shock value, much like Patty killing herself, which is why I'm glad they didn't do it. BUT, I also think it would have been much more realistic. The stuff Ellen was doing would have gotten her killed very quickly IMO
