So I finished Damages a while back but I never really understood the whole horse-seeing of Patty in season 3. Also, I am confused about the character played by Keith Carradine. He and the horse really messed me up! He was in her flashbacks but he was also in her present. Was she just envisioning him and what was the purpose?

Dreams are a big aspect to this show. They are used to show the viewers what the character's conscience is like. Keith Carradine was an illusion and so was the horse. In reality, many years ago Patty caused her miscarriage and Keith Carradine found her near a farm. So Patty was just remembering this event.
