Spoiler Question About Ending/Deleted Scene

On the DVD I just watched, in the "deleted scenes" extra features, there was an unusual loooong close-up of Takeshi Kaneshiro's suffering face. It then went to a more distant shot of him being flayed alive, more or less crucified, with guys sweeping away the blood and all that.

Another post mentioned his character being punished for the murder he committed, apparently some months later. Is that part of the traditional historical story? And was that sort of punishment "normal" for its time and place in Chinese history?

And I should add that although I liked the chance to study Takeshi's face, I am glad the scene was not added to the film; the ending was perfect left as it was.
