Why was he watching his girlfriend getting banged?

He thought he wasn't good enough and that his girlfriend deserved to have a sexual experience with a guy like his roommate. He aparently felt genuinely happy about giving that oportunity to his girlfriend.

True, he wanted to watch his girlfriend with another guy, but it was pretty clear that the boyfriend had the hots for his male roommate and, couldn't admit it or didn't like that he did, and asking him to have sex with his girlfriend let him get off on not just her, but him as well, allowing him to see his roommate naked, see him with a hard*n and having sex, and without him having to fully admit to himself or either of them how he truly felt.

His sexual attraction to his roommate was intimated during every scene for those characters, in various ways:

At some point in the past, he sought out the opportunity to check out his roommate's d*ck, without the roommate knowing. Sure straight guys will check out other guys in the locker room, to see how they compare, but do you know any straight guys that would spy on their roommate naked to get at look at their d*ck?

Putting his hand on the guy's ass, and not removing it even when the roommate asked him to.

When they take a break, all three are sitting on the side of the bed, very closely, and the boyfriend is sitting next to the roommate and not beside his girlfriend. Most straight guys would sit close to their girlfriend, not another naked guy, don't you think? In this scene, he again references the roommate's d*ck and how big it is.

When the roommate asks why they chose him, the boyfriend gives reasons, saying they wanted someone familiar, that he doesn't really like him, and that once they stop being roommates, he is sure he won't hate him anymore and sure that they will go back to being friends, and ends with 'it's really easier for me to see her doing this with someone, I really, you know, don't like' and as the italics indicate, he annuciated the 'don't like' which pointed to his inability to admit to himself, or let it be known that he was actually sexually attracted to him...right after he says that his girlfriend says 'also Gord finds you pretty attractive' and the boyfriend nods and agrees.

In the next sex scene, just before he gets off, the boyfriend snaps a picture...of the roommate's ass, not his girlfriend's face or naked body.

After he gets off, when he comes back to the room he is naked below the waist, mad about the orange juice, (which wasn't really about the orange juice) and pulls the roommate off and out of his girlfriend, and jumps on him, straddling him, his bare ass sitting on the guy's hard d*ck. The roommate tells him to put clothes on but the boyfriend just keeps sitting on him.

Next they are all sitting on the edge of the bed again, the boyfriend sitting closely next to the naked roommate again and not beside his girlfriend, and this is where he says he did it for her and why, and she says she did it for him. He then talks about how a guy like him doesn't belong with a girl like her and says 'look at this guy, he's got that firm ass, cute nose, and look at this *beep* as he pulls the sheet up and looks at the guy's d*ck. Even in a MMF situation, a truly straight guy would not say those things about the other guy's body parts, nor pull up the sheet to look at his d*ck.

Later they hug and the roommate doesn't like it because their exposed d*cks are touching, but the boyfriend just keeps hugging him, tighter.

After the roommate leaves, there is some conversation and then the girlfriend says 'do you love me, would you do anything for me?' He says 'anything, anything you want baby.' She sort of purrs like she is excited about something and then she gasps like she has an idea and says 'you know I was watching the two of you hug over there, and it was nice, nice and hot!' and he gets a big grin, knowing exactly what she is thinking and you can tell by his wide grin that he is totally into the idea, without her even having to say it.

Even if he was struggling and couldn't admit his feelings, his girlfriend knew, wasn't bothered by it, and seemed to want to help him with 'coming out' with his bisexual feelings or curiosity. This was evidenced by her pointing out, right after the boyfriend went on and on about not being the roommate's friend or even liking him, that the boyfriend found the roommate pretty attractive. In the end she tells him how it was hot seeing him hug the roommate, (keeping in mind that they were both naked below the waist and their 'parts' were touching) which was basically her way of telling him she knows and its ok, and then she tells him she has an idea, indicating, not only is it ok, but now she wants to do it again, this time a threesome, and watch him have sex with the roommate too.

While his motive may have been low self-esteem and wanting to watch a guy he, to his confusion, found he was attracted to, have sex with his girlfriend, her motive seems to have been to help him out with the feelings for his roommate he was struggling to come to terms with. In the end, after the experience, that is exactly what happened and, while the filmakers didn't choose to progress the scene into a bisexual threesome, the viewer was left to believe that a threesome, involving bisexual activites, was going to follow in the near future.
