i loved it. it's not flawless, but it is still beautiful, gloomy, great atmosphere and almodovar-like, lots of love for details. i really look forward to getting a better quality copy.

"He's one of the few directors whose films I'm content to just experience rather than second guess or critic while I'm viewing."
I completely and utterly agree with that.
I cannot wait to see it, it hasn't yet come out where I live :(

Boring boring boring. Tedious , trite, clunky dialogue (lots of exposition to explain and move the plot on... And as per other threads, no-one can even agree as to who was driving the car (rather important you might think). Cruz looks great of course, but to have her simpering in different wigs ( cf the Hats scene in Pretty Woman anyone?) does not make a great movie. The sex scenes got a laugh at our show : so false! And as for the lingering shots of her walking away wiggling her bum...really! and then she had to do the nude scene.... dirty old man stuff I say.

Oh My God, thank you! I thought this movie was a piece of *beep* although it had some moments. I agree with everything you've said here, but my main problem with this tepid waste of celluloid and with the other several Almodovar pictures I've seen is the irredeemable narcissism of the whole thing, placing the burning ideals of an unorthodox filmmaker at the heart of every one of his movies, as if the only thing that could be of interest to his audience is the drama of Almodovar himself. Starring in his own projected melodrama by proxy. It's got to be the most expensive form of masturbation out there.

Enjoyable, and not disapointing. It was a bit too long, but then it ended quite suddenly.

Enjoyable, but not up to par with Almodovar's other recent work. It took too long to get going, then when it did, it didn't get very far. It was also overlong and some scenes were unnecessary (the scene where Diego ODs seemed like a very contrived plot device to get Harry to tell him the story, and it took too long to get to that point. And shoehorning in the 'twist' that Harry was Diego's father was pointless). However, all the performances were fantastic and the middle section was brilliant.

It also felt a little like Almodovar-lite. Barely any of his usual themes were there and none of it quite felt like a traditional Almodovar film - but that might have been the point. To be fair I haven't seen most of his earlier work so there may well have been a lot of stuff I missed - apparently the re-edited film is supposed to parallel Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown.

Rape's such a harsh word, I prefer the term 'love ambush'

I saw this yesterday, and was pretty much absorbed throughout. When I left the cinema, however, I became aware that I hadn't really gained anything, and that I would never watch the film again. In hindsight, it reminded me of one of those movies you come across on daytime TV, watch the whole thing, enjoy it, and then instantly forget about it.

I agree with some of the other points made on this thread. The OD leading to the story being told seemed contrived, the 'Mitel is your father' bit was pointless, or at least under developed, and I also thought the bit about returning to the film and re editing it was, again, underdeveloped.

That said, I thought Penelope Cruz was excellent, she is gradually becoming one of the best actresses working today I think. All she needs now is for the perfect role to come along, to cement her position at the top.

6.5/10 from me!
