Dialogue was riddled with anachronisms

I don't understand why someone would create a story with modern sensibilities, characters and dialogue but dress it up in Victorian clothing. Why bother? Does the writer or director have a weakness for beautiful costumes and antiques? I tried to get into the story but kept being pulled out of it by ridiculous dialogue and the otherwise deliciously evil Jared Harris's unrecognizably Swedish accent.
