No true remorse from the soldiers

I just finished watching this and I'm absolutely shocked with the soldiers' attitude towards what happened in Abu Ghraib. There was only one soldier who seemed disgusted with what he did and what happened, the rest are simply giving justifications for their actions and blaming the ppl in charge. They didn't seem remorseful at all. They were just explaining why they did what they did.

And that woman that kept taking pictures with the prisoners is an idiot if she thinks her lies are going to be believed. I mean posing with thumbs up next to a dead guy with a huge smile on her face and her she says "I thought he died of a heart attack, I didn't know he was tortured to death." Like that makes any difference. Who the hell poses next to a dead guy?!?!! What on earth would possess a person to kneel down next to a dead person, plaster a huge smile on their faces
("because that's what you do when you take a picture"), gives thumbs up ("because that's something i learned from the children."). I swear I've never heard anything more ridiculous in my entire life! what she did was completely sick and disrespectful no matter how he died. And I don't believe her saying she didn't know he didn't die of a heart attack. The guy's face was clearly beaten up and he was bleeding from his head.

I was mad when the pictures first came out but I am now extremely outraged after seeing this documentary.

dont expect to know what a soldier feels or thinks after iraq and ESPECIALLY coming from abu ghraib, didnt you see the first half the documentary, the *beep* they saw would mess anyones mind up, and just thinking about it its most likly not the first time they talked about it, i do admit that the pics with the thumbs up was pretty *beep* up, but aside from her I believe everything they said was the truth

I didn't say they lied. The only person I said was lying was the female soldier who took pics with the prisoners.

I'm saying that the other soldiers didn't seem sorry for what they did. They seemed shocked by the orders they got and what they were told to do, but they didn't seem sorry. That's what I'm saying.

They were talking about WHY they did it in the documentary and talking about how confused they were with the orders, but only ONE soldier seemed truly sorry for following those orders.

I totally agree. That woman's is mentally ill. And the way she explained why she smiled made me sick. She needs to be put in a hospital not in prison.

there is also another doc called "standard operating procedure"... it has less political stuff & much more in depth interviews with the soldiers involved, including lyndie england, who is dumb as f?#k.

listening to her and sabrina talk makes my brain hurt.

Agreed. Only Ken Davis (I believe that was his name) seemed genuinely sorry. The rest were mostly trying to justify their actions, even though they obviously knew that what they were doing was so terribly wrong on so many different levels.

Absolutely pathetic and makes me sick to my stomach what this P.O.S. administration has authorized and been able to get away with.

Can't wait till November of '08.

Well that's what makes it sad. I figured in the end they'd all profess guilt at their actions but really they all just blame the higher-ups.

Yes, the higher ups deserve to be punished too (Especially Rumsfeld) but it's just nuts only Ken even remotely expressed any guilt.

Oh thank God someone else thought that aswell! That was one of the most disturbing things in this documentary (which I watched yesterday). That she did that and explained why in the same way you explain how to make brownies. She didn´t even fake remorse so why did she agree to do the interview? Doesn´t she understand that she will come off as a sociopath?
If you read this, you don´t got no heart, tell me how it feels!

It was horrible to hear that iraqi prisoner tell about the night that man died of the torture. I have seen photos of him many times but prior to this I did not know how he died, what his name was and that the Criminals In Action (that my government sadly cooperates with) were responsible.

You can never take joy in another persons death, because life is holy and irreplaceable.
Besides, she barely even know who this guy was! I am 100% sure she wouldn´t smile at a picture of her and a fellow fallen soldier! Maybe she hasn´t taken it in, what happened. Maybe she will come around and seek therapy. I hope so because we can not allow ourselves to become this jaded, inhumane and numb. No way! Good over evil, life over death.

"Remember those who are in prison,
as though you were in prison with them;
those who are being tortured,
as though you yourselves were being tortured."

They were following orders. That's what soldiers are trained to do.

I'm a totally bitchin' bio writer from Mars!

reply

I could say that about Auschwitz.

"They were gassing jews. That's what SS-campcommanders are trained to do."

As if that is any justification for the crimes against humanity committed both in Nazi Germany and in Abu Ghraib prison.

Of course the US government is the real psychopath in the story. But what does that say about people who decided consciously to follow the orders of that psychopath?

That picture of the soldier smiling and giving a thumbs up next to the body is one of the most chilling, horrifying images I have ever seen.

It shows how easy it is for people from a supposedly noble, democratic country to become no better than Nazis. In what realm is that considered acceptable human behaviour?
