Not going to watch it.

I dont like what Ive read here about USA having to "wake up" and stop it. Its not the USAs responsability. The middle eastern dictators and the Sudan government have done everything in their power to vote down any action being taken against this genocide, for years they have refused to acknowledge any trouble taking place there at all. The UN cant act if the human rights board is controlled by dictators who say all is well. Now its already too late, theyre dead, what are the UN troops going to do? Theyre allowed there now because the job is already done, why bother. Its just going to be a show for the media, nothing of real value.

The only thing that can be done is inform the rest of Africa what has happened and arm them heavily so they can reclaim the land and fight back the next time it happen. The USA and Europe should stay as far away as possible, this is not our fight and its not our responsability, I refuse to feel any guilt after watching many recordings of how the arab nations voted against UN action. We did what we could, not our fault if we are voted against in the UN.

I agree with you. It's not America's responsibility to stop the killing. However, it is the right thing to do. Remember when doing the right thing meant something? Personally, at this point, I think we should load up one of those humongous gasoline bombs in a C130 and drop it in the middle of the government compound in Khartoum. Then, send a letter asking them to stop the killing.

Yossarian said what I was about to. It isn't our responsiblity and you don't have to do anything if you don't want, but you can donate some money, but make sure to do it at the right place to where the Suadanese people benefit.

reply

Nothing you donate to "Save Darfur" ever reaches the people who need it. Your donations go to lobbyists whose main concern is not the suffering of these people in Darfur, but rather punishing the Sudanese government for its refusal to recognize Israel and pave the way for the next US-led war for oil and resources.

The UN cant act if the human rights board is controlled by dictators who say all is well.
It is ultimately the Security Council that holds the key to the implementation of sanctions or the launching of a military mission into Darfur (see Article 41/42 of the Charter).

And actually it is, at least according to jus naturale legal theorists, the USA's responsibility, as the USA has signed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights:
...the declaration represents jus cogens, that is, peremptory norms of international law, governing state behaviour. While no authoritative list of what constitutes a violation of jus cogens exists, the complicity of a government in acts involving aggressive war, crimes against humanity, slavery, or piracy would be a breach of international law.

-James H. Wolfe, Modern International Law, 2002, p.83 (My emphasis)

reply

Well its not what you believe... it IS the international community's responsibility to do something about it. Its not always about America, however. The RESPONSIBILITY TO PROTECT deals with the issue of state-intervention. The primary responsibility for that protection lies with sovereign states. But if that state is unable or unwilling to protect its population, or is itself the cause of the threat, the responsibility to protect those people shifts to the international community of states.

Read more about it here:

Thus, the USA and the rest of the World must intervene. And how can you argue its not the USA's responsibility when you are trying to 'liberate' people in Iraq and bring them freedom. Why is this your responsibility? And what about the freedom of the Sudanese.

reply

I totally agree with you that it is the world's responsibility to stop things like this. Not just the USA's responsibility, but the entire world's responsibility.

The US can't act alone, because we've seen how the world reacts when we overthrow one of the most brutal dictatorships in modern history. So it takes a collaborative effort from many countries.

But how should that be done? The UN obviously does not care. That's just a debating society for a bunch of politicians to further their own careers and pretend that they care.

So what should be done? I'd really like to see the world act on things like this. But how? I'm open to suggestions.
