Why this show is pure genious.

Everyone here who hates the show /literally/ doesn't get it.

But rather than just bash, I'll do my best to explain WHY it's pure genious.

The people who think the show is stupid take it at face-value. They see the reasoning behind what they do as the same behind an 8 year old thinking saying "poop" is funny, whilst the underlying reasons are vastly different.

Essentially, they KNOW it's not funny and stupid, it's just the simple fact they sat down and said "We're *beep* doing this", intentionally awkward *beep* intentionally bad graphics, essentially parodying parodies, that in a way, it's pure genius.

It's the thought process behind it that makes the show hilarious. People who don't get it simply don't realize that.

reply

wow your the first person to bring up how the thought process is what makes it funny and I completely agree. Its just how they are and imagining them writing this and the seriousness of the guests they get on thier show to do very bizarre and unsettling things. So good

"And I'll leave you in this room to ROT!"

reply

I like how the person who thinks this show is genius can't spell genius.

No, actually, this show has nothing intelligent to say and uses slapstick, shock value, sexuality and toilet humor for its laughs. It's complete absurdity that anyone with a slight budget could imitate to perfection. An 8 year old will laugh at the exact same thing, and you're trying to tell me that you laugh at it on a level beyond them?

Don't get me wrong, if you like the show then that's fine, you like that kind of humor. But don't get pretentious and pretend that there's something intelligent behind it that makes you superior to someone who doesn't laugh at it, because there absolutely is not.

reply

I like how you nitpick at a Freudian typo. I forgot, nothing more.

I never said it /preached/ intelligent *beep* It's not, say, South Park which uses lowbrow and/or absurdest comedy to preach high brow points on society. It does none of that.

But it's geniUs in the comedic fashion, is what I said.

And honestly, yes, an 8 year old and a person who gets the show would both laugh at it for different reasons.

But even immature kids haven't come up with this absurdest comedy.

They intentionally use horrible graphics not due to budget, but for the sake of being retarded. The whole show is absurdest, and the fact that their comedy has never been done before that I know of is what makes it amazing.

Rather than cringing at the show for being "immature", or even laughing casually at it like as if I was watching something like Mad TV or SNL, I find myself gagging like a maniac, but also staring blankly with this confused look on my face. It's when you consider the fact that at some point, the writers sat down at a table, and said "Okay, this is what's gonna happen. A girl is sitting on a chair, on a platform with rocket engines floating over a lava pit, singing 'Make my bub-bubs bounce' over and over while three men apparently try and impress her through various dances. All three fail and are dumped down a pit. Then another man flies in, succeeds, and for no apparent reason zooms into her abdomen and dances with the children inside her. Then he bursts out, dances in her belly, and the babies fly out and dance too. Then the whole platform blasts off."

That is what makes it funny. Actually, honestly, it is partially shock value. You're shocked that they came up with something so utterly insane.

That and the forced awkward silences, amplified noise of random things for no apparent reason, bizarreness, and such that accompanies the toilet humor. It's like it's mocking parodies of parodies, like it's reached a new meta-level, or another dimension. It's like the creators literally threw out any veil of sanity when making the show.

Honestly, I cannot think of any better way to explain it. I tried.

You just have to "get it".

You are, in fact, taking the show at face value.

reply

My main problem with what you said is the same thing all my friends say; it's intelligent on a level that most people don't comprehend. No, I "get it," they're being completely absurd while making weak parodies of things that are already odd. Infomercials, Sit-coms, the treatment of sex in the media, and many other things. My point is that while they be absurd about these subjects they say NOTHING about them. The show does nothing but try to catch you off guard with something you never thought they'd do. There's absolutely nothing intelligent about it. If you like absurdity then you like the show, but please don't pretend that you're smarter than other people because you "get it" and they don't. There's nothing intelligent to get.

Simplified; I don't care that you like the show, but it's not intelligent humor.

reply

The show does nothing but try to catch you off guard with something you never thought they'd do

I disagree. They aim for much more than shock value.

There's absolutely nothing intelligent about it.

Wrong.
It touches on a very specific sort of humour that most do not understand. It's absurd, compulsive and graphic for us freaks who want nothing more than to stop the endless rational thinking. It pushes to the limit these themes that make us very depressed and uncomfortable. Im intelligent and this show has made me laugh until I couldn't breathe. I think it triggers everyone differently. The writers must have some intelligence to be able to put this show together.

There's a comedian here in Germany, his name is Helge Schneider. He's a musical genius (he can play many instruments and prefers to do live-concerts to doing movies etc.) - and also an absurdist, dada-esque comedian / clown.

He does in a way quite similar sketches like Tim and Eric. And same here: Most Germans seem not to "get" what he's doing and only think that he's a "childish" and "not funny" weirdo.

Yes, same phenomenon: The German mainstream media are basically a copy of the US-media. Heck! - we even have like 80 percent of the same tv-shows and sitcoms (and the Germans DUB everything over...which makes bad sitcoms even worse, but that's a whole different story altoghether)

Anyway: There IS a difference between mainstream-tastes and the taste of a small group of people. That's just a fact.

Yes, sometimes also the mainstream comedy might have some good jokes... but it's mostly the "common denominator" stuff. Simple and easy.

I grew up with all the good and bad television of the 1980s and 1990s... and when Tim and Eric go to 11 with their parodies of shopping-television for example... well, it's nothing I laugh out loud about - but I just enjoy when they take the piss out of this brainless garbage that is broadcased throughout the whole western hemisphere of this beautiful planet 24/7!

Tim and Eric very often go too far and too gross. But their main-direction of "comedy" I quite enjoy. It's a parody of our brainless consumer-culture... of our zombie-mentality that is sooooo low and simply about eating, sex and primitive entertainment.

Well, that's what they do...

"this show has nothing intelligent to say and uses slapstick, shock value, sexuality and toilet humor for its laughs. "

True. Well, true for the most part. The show has in fact done some pretty fantastic parodies, like the jim and derrick episode for example. It's nothing amazing as far as intelligent comedy goes, but I would say it's definitely a step beyond mere absurdist comedy.

" It's complete absurdity that anyone with a slight budget could imitate to perfection"

False.

This thread is lame. You can grasp that they're doing the whole andy kaufman "this outrageously dumb and i'm doin it despite that fact" type of thing and still hate it or not find it the least bit funny.

Nice assumption. Wrong, but cute.
But don't get pretentious and pretend that there's something intelligent behind it that makes you superior to someone who doesn't laugh at it...
! They didn't act superior or pretentious - all they said is that you might not get it. Nothing about the opening post screamed "I'm better than you because I like this show and you don't!"

Wow, buddy... a little insecure about our stance, are we?

reply

OP is right. Some people will never get it. They just don't have that part of the funny bone in 'em or something. Just like I'll never understand people that think Dane Cook or Larry-The-Fartin'-Imitation-Redneck-Guy-With-His-Armpits-Hanging-Out-Guy is funny. Oh well.

I will say this though. If these guys were talentless hacks, there is no way people like Bob Odenkirk, Zack Galiafinakis, David Cross, Patton Oswalt, John C. Reilly, Rainn Wilson, Will Ferell, Will Forte, Fred Willard and Maynard from Tool and too many more to mention would be working with them on a regular basis. These people fuggin' know COMEDY. Duh. It's what they do.

reply

This is what I don't get, I love most of the Comedians and actors you listed in that second paragraph... But this show is just not funny to me.

Even when I've seen their parts on the show I find them to be unfunny, but when they're performing material that they wrote themselves (or their writers wrote) I find them funny. Tim and Eric just rub me the wrong way, I guess.

Also, I wouldn't call it a "Freudian slip" since you misspelled genius twice, that tells me that 'genious' is how you think it is spelled. And the fact that you make spelling errors isn't a big deal, but don't bring up Freud to try sounding smart to make up for your shortcomings.

reply

Help me, Hoagieman!!!

reply

Vagabon is totally right. The guy that misspelled genius is a total idiot, and the misspelling totally invalidates everything he's ever said, to anyone. And then the guy missuse the term 'freudian? Please I mean, the guy's just plain dumb, and probably a rapist too. I say ban him from IMDB.

But I would say to Mr. VagabonDoom to try to view the show from a different perspective. All the comedians/actors you say you love have to focus their material for certain audiences. Adult Swim is a very niche audience (Oh god, did I spell and use that term correctly?). Tim and Eric and the guest stars that seem to love them can be free to craft performances and a type of art that entertains themselves first and foremost. If you were there creating with them, wouldn't you be having fun? Dressing up in the silly costumes, saying the ridiculous lines? Even if you don't find it funny watching it on tv, surely you can get some enjoyment from getting a glimpse at their inside joke.

reply

Amen brother!
Some people just don't get it all!
And sadly, Mr. Vagabon probably never will!
Btw, just so you know (or for that matter, even care!)
Vagabon, Tim & Eric & Tom Goes to The Mayor were
both written by Bob Odenkirk for
several episodes! And he was producer too! :)
Btw, if you like these, you are surely familiar
w/ Bob & David Cross' "Mr. Show" from HBO right?! :)

reply

'Mr. Show' was better than 'Tim & Eric' but they are both great.

Here is my problem with this. The fans are probably the ones that make this show even worse? How? Ll, those fans talk of being intelligent yet they can't seem to grasp the simple concept that people can "GET" the show and still not like it, it's a simple concept that these so called "intelligent" fans can't seem to grasp. What is even far worse is they somehow seem to feel that they are better than others. They take pretentiousness to a whole new level. I mean I love the sport of American football BUT, I would never deem someone to be less intelligent than me if they do not like it. Hell, I know people who do in fact "get" the sport but yet still don't like it and I can grasp that concept. I for one am not going to call them idiots, morons, or simply unintelligent because they do not like it.

So, in conclusion, you fans on here need to realize that someone can in fact "get" something and still not like it. It's not a hard concept to grasp yet you fans seem to have trouble with said concept.

So you don't get it?

Try stereotyping and generalizing more. It REALLY helps your case.

I won't bash on someone for liking this show since I like shows that others don't tend to, but to say that we don't "get" it is ridiculous. The show is complete nonsense. Yeah, we get it. It is supposed to be nonsense. It just isn't funny to most people. I could throw a bunch of random crap together and call it genius. The reason you have never seen it before, is because nobody in their right mind would bother.

Again, I am not trying to bash here, although it sounds like it. I just think it's funny that fans of this show are saying that they are on some other level of intelligence. Everybody has their own sense of humor. Personally, I think there is nothing clever/funny/intelligent about this show. It is simply weird, and I understand that it is supposed to be that way.

Enjoy, and goodnight.

reply

But see, you're saying you get it yet you say it is nonsense and that it is supposed to be nonsense. That just isn't true. It isn't random for the sake of random. That type humor exists but Tim & Eric aren't doing it. Well okay, they slip in a bit of randomness here and there, but any fan will tell you it all makes perfect sense in the end, which it does.

They are onto something incredibly inventive, creative and intelligent. It's not for everyone, as you clearly know, and that's fine. Most people I know (who even know it exists) don't like it either. But to say it is simply weird for the sake of being weird is wrong.

reply

It doesn't take genius to make bad skits, it takes balls. I get it is supposed to be bad, anybody that doesn't get that is too stupid to be alive. I quite simply don't like that brand of humor. Now you can stop telling me what I should like or not or what I get or not. Some people just don't like it, period.

reply

Lemme see if I get the gist of this.....

If I want to compete with standing comedy shows/series, I should work as hard as I can to make my show as unfunny as possible in the hopes that someone will decide I'm a genre redefining genius.

It doesn't sound so good when you really lay it out like that, maybe I just need to eat a few hipsters and gain their powers of irony.

reply

No, we get it. It's not that intelligent or original an approach... Yes yes, we all know about sh_tty cultural tropes. Good job, and welcome to the Frosh Quad.

This stuff is only funny if playing with tropes is somehow still unique or original to you. This would be MUCH funnier to me if I were 15-22... Old enough to identify tropes, but young enough to think that it's original, thought-provoking, or well-executed when they're lampooned.

If you want to see this done better, check out Mr Show With Bob & David (which is coming back later this year, btw). At least then you'll be getting the OG of Dada-ist cultural satire, by two people who don't think they're above comedy.

Tim & Eric appeal to the age group they do because they're stuck on things most of us get over in our early 20's.
