FAct is the bombings saved MILILLIONS Of Japanse Lives
That's right. A contested Invasion of Japan would have cost one to two million US casualties and five to ten million Japanese ones, the great majority civilians.
Just look at the death rates on Okinawa.
Worse yet would have been if the Soviets had invaded concurrently from teh north. They would have a) placed millions of Japanese in POW camps, and if the german experiences is any indicator, b) there would have been 30% death rates and c) they would have been held up to five years after the war ended, and d) hundreds of thousands of Japanese women would have been raped by Soviet troops as was done in Germany, and e) the USSR would have permanently annexed even more Japanese terrority.
Even before a single US troop hit the beach, millions of more Japanese would have been killed n relentless firebombing 10x the scale of early 1945, and tens of thousands of US troops would have been killed by kamikazes targeting troops ships.
No event in human history SAVED more lives than the decision to use the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
