As a fan of Scifi this absolutely irritates me.

Humanity has a vessel capable of going anywhere in the universe yet all they want to do is sit around and do nothing? Where is the thirst for knowledge that defines our species?

Think about where we are right now. There was a point where we all were on board with exploring the depths of the universe but now we can't even be bothered to go back to the moon.

reply

What does that have to do with Wall-E where they have a self sustaining, hyperdrive capable star cruiser? The later is a matter of money and lazy politicians this a matter of having the means and not taking advantage of them.

We don't know exactly where they are at the time of the film. For all we know they might have done some exploring but eventually got bored and complacent when they didn't find any other nearby habitable planets. Plus we don't know for sure if it is in fact hyperdrive capable, just that it can travel at very fast speeds. It wouldn't make sense to fund something like that if they were planning on returning to Earth eventually, and it would take four years of lightspeed travel just to reach the closest star, and there's certainly no guarantee they'd find a habitable planet there.

reply

Line the from the movie "Ten seconds to hyperjump". It's either lightspeed capable, a plot hole, or Pixar isn't aware that the movie going public equates hyperjump with FTL. Take your pick.

I don't know, maybe it is. That's getting beyond the main point though. It would still take a really long time to reach the next star system and they may not have wanted to drift so far away from Earth.

reply

We see there thirst for knowledge when it comes to Earth, to them, Earth is the unknown.

Correction. The later is because of science hating liberals (aka democrats)

I prefer not to play the party game and go with the simple fact that all politicians are power hungry and lie. Romney is an old man stuck on outdated ideas and Obama is an idealistic fool until both of them stop wasting their time pissing on the other and pleasing their party over actually doing something for the American people, neither is worthy of my vote and that is all I'm going to say about that. This topic is not about politics, it's about a movie with a love sick robot.

That's fine, I wouldn't argue with that point at all. However, the post I was responding to said the reason we hadn't done it was due to them being "lazy". That point was incorrect so I challenged it.

Go to the moon for doing what?

reply

I agree with TribeFan695, we can't be arsed to go back to the Moon nor go to Mars since the 70s, what makes you think those humans who HAVE GROWN INDULGENT due to all their comfort AND WITH AUTO SHEPPERDING THEM TO ITS WILL would fare better?

Seriously, we have a thirst for knowledge because we have needs and pains and hopes and uncertainty. The fat future humans of WALLE have none of that. Some points here are that 1) overreliance in technology for things you can/should do yourself will make you a fat bastard who can literally not see what's in front of you 2) those people are in "stand by", they have stancated because they are waiting for the "fabled" time when they can return to Earth and recolonize. 3) The human's retaking control of their hopes and destiny, regaining their "thirst" if you will, plays a major part in the climax. I mean, there's the whole Captain-rising-to-his-feet-and-walking-whilst-Also-sprach-Zarathustra-is-playing. You can't get more literal than that.

As a "sci-fi fan", I'll let you think of the other things going on yourself.

reply

Yet over the last few centuries we have only become more interested in exploration and technology. The Fat-Indulgent theory just doesn't reflect reality sorry.

Also why would we ever give up the thrill of exploration? Do you think as the world advances we would be happy to give that away?

I just give pissed off with the Fat-Indulgent theory because you see it pop up in other places. It's usually claimed by people who hate technology IMO (not referring to you).

reply

"Yet over the last few centuries we have only become more interested in exploration and technology."

I don't think so. The moon landing was one of the most watched events in history. How many people know and care about Curiosity's landing.

Hell, even the moon landing was more about beating the Soviets than some pure motivation to explore.

human nature is to explore the unknown, to be curious, and that's why we are pretty much the only living species in the animal world to have made discoveries to make better (and worse) our lives. Without the ability to be curious and wanting to explore we still would have been living in caves like in the prehistoric times. Inventions and innovations would have been NOWHERE without curious, smart, creative minds.

That said a few fat humans living on a fictional spaceship in a fictional world losing interest and losing touch with the real world - not so far fetched and then a little bucket of a robot comes to change their lives by changing their outlook on what is in front of them - why not?

Nowadays people are more and more afraid of space and exploration and can't see the bigger picture of what it means to need to discover other planets, worlds, exploring the moon, Mars and other world. A lot of people - especially religious zealots - can't seem to get it through their stupid, thick skulls that to save our own world we need to understand OTHER worlds that are in our vicinity... I guess it's more fullfilling and more interesting to talk about ourselves on facebook, twitter, twatter, and post pictures of our cup of coffee or our morning sh!t for the whole to see how intresting and retarded we are than do something more meaningful and more communal.

Wall-E - looooved it. 9/10

Two factually incorrect statements in one sentence. Impressive

1) You are a bigot.
* What did the 3 Apollo 8 astronauts read when in Lunar orbit? The Genesis creation story from the Bible.

* The first thing done on the Lunar surface was a religious ceremony. Yes that "stupid religious zealot" took communion on the lunar surface.

* NASA itself was packed with religious folks (Jerry Woodfill, James Irwin -8th man to walk on the moon-, etc... etc... etc...)

You loonies are trying your damnedest to re-write history, but as J.Adams said "Facts are stubborn things.

2) Our world doesn't need saving.

3) Even if our world did need saving, knowing what the surface of Mars is like isn't going to hold the key.

reply

You are a totally complete imbecile with the inability to understand a statement. You MUST be a zealot to get so worked up and attack me with such deranged statements of your own.

I am a biggot??? LOL OK, so says the biggot who doesn't think our world needs saving. If our world doesn't need saving then what the fück is the bible for?

I'm not trying to rewrite anything you mental twat. I believe in God, but I also believe that he create the universe and other worlds matter just as much as our own.

yes

LOL OK, so says the biggot who doesn't think our world needs saving.
You are deranged. You realize that, right?

WTF are you talking about? You started silly ad hominem attacks and when told you're wrong you continue to attack? How *ehem* christian of you.

If our world doesn't need saving then what the fück is the bible for?
You claimed the answer to saving the world was...
...to save our own world we need to understand OTHER worlds ...

... Is that where you believe all copies of the Bible are? Again, you are deranged.

So we need to understand other worlds (your words) in order to.. find the bible? HAHAHAHAHAHAHa You're precious.

I'm not trying to rewrite anything you mental twat.
John 13:35 You're doing it wrong.

I believe in God, but I also believe that he create the universe and other worlds matter just as much as our own.
ROTFL... I hope you get back on your meds before you end up on some clock tower.

reply

I don't know if you noticed while watching. But the humans in the movie just don't care, they even show how the humans just lose interest and "viability" to what is right beyond their chairs.

reply

In the DVD extras the narrator talks about "sight-seeing" while on the space cruise and say that the ships' ultimate destination is the Kuiper Belt. Evidently the ships are expected to give tours of the solar system, which would take generations, and then conveniently jump back to Earth when it was deemed habitable.
Apparently by the time the Axiom reached the end of its cruise, the novelty of being in space had worn off and the constant brainwashing of BnL had (almost)completely killed any ambitions humanity had. And after they were blocked from returning to Earth, the future generations became completely introverted and content with the situation.

Where is the thirst for knowledge that defines our species?

Only a fraction of the population votes and a large number of those that do are biased and dishonest. People don't care about things the way you think they do. i thought the people getting fat was hilarious, because I could totally picture it happening.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA... That thirst for knowledge... that we all look for SITTING at a desk or on a couch... on our computers? XD

Silly

well remember the computer had gained the power and the captain and his ship lost all motivation except to eat and just watch tv.

Something like what we do now.

Then Finally the captain was like WHATTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT! Then the computer tried to stop him even though earth was okay then

Err...its a cartoon, people. Its supposed to move you emotionally and entertain you. The robots have cute little personalities and the autopilot is a steering wheel.

Lots of kids would rather sit and play video games than go outside and play pickup baseball.

Lots of adults sit around and watch TV rather than go volunteer feeding the homeless.

But then, NASA already has a list of thousands of people who have volunteered to go colonize Mars (on a one way trip). I think that the human spirit is still there...just under assault.

"Oh no...they sent the wrong Spock!"
