Seagal in 'Fat Elvis' period?
I haven't seen Urban Justice yet and it's encouraging that there are a few good comments apart from the usual fanboi stuff (you could wheel him out in his coffin and some of them would say the action was the best ever!). But perhaps people live in eternal hope that 'this one' finally will be the start of his return from a sad decline in recent years.
Leading up to this film, it seemed that Seagal was definitely in his 'Fat Elvis' period. I don't know what was going on in his personal life but he simply didn't give a stuff. He'd lost it. His movies had become Elvis movies...just pump 'em out for the cash. Don't worry about the script, the acting, the production values, his fan's expectations. Don't worry about staying in shape for the action sequences, just wear a girdle and fake it. It looked like he just turned up on the day, went through the motions, left the set as early as poss, and left the blanks for the director and stuntmen to fill in.
Like Elvis he was still capable of the odd moment of brilliance but was basically a parody of what he once was, and he couldn't even seem to see it or, if he did, even sadder, he simply didn't care.
