Not only no Clete; no Helen Soileau (sp?) I was thinking who could play Clete; but was unable to come up with anyone..love him! And am beside myself with anticipation. Got Burke's new book - can't wait to read it too. So glad my pal gave me this site to look at!!
Since neither character appears in the book why would anyone expect them to be in a film version?!!?
shareNeither character is in the novel unfortunately. Clete is one of my favorite literary characters. Hell, I like him more than DAve. Even though they cast John Goodman as Julie Balboni, he would be perfect for Clete. From the description that Burke gives of Balboni, Sylvester Stallone would have been absolutely perfect. Think of him in Copland and you'll see what I mean. In the book, Burke describes Balboni as having black hair (Italian) and having a perpetual sneer as the result of a facial nerve being damaged by the doctor when he was born. The exact same thing happened to Stallone, which is why he has that distinctive way of speaking. But oh well, I am a big Goodman fan and am thrilled to see both him and Tommy Lee JOnes in the film.
