Burned the hobo, made it home just in time, and gathered as a family as if nothing had happened? Of course they'd have to change the ending a bit. If anything it would be unlike any other Christmas movie I'd ever seen....
sharewell, I thought it was in poor taste that he took the chainsaw over the hobo. In a PG-13, we aren't sitting there thinking OMG, he's gonna do it. We're thinking, now what is going to happen to prevent them killing this guy...
Would have liked to see them try to dig the hole for a while, and break the shovel. Then try to start the chainsaw (not right over him, but side of the truck, where it isn't quite clear you'd be convicted of attempted murder), and Boyde drops the chainsaw or something and it runs down the road into the truck tire. That would have been a more plausible way to strand them b.c. honestly that truck was not going to have a cracked radiator from hitting a 175 lb hobo. And the racket could have awoken the hobo, who then gets on his snowmobile, in typical drunk guy doesn't know WTF he's doing, rides up to them as they are looking all sad about the truck, and says, "Hey, d'ya wanna .... ride...!" Then the wine-o should start singing jingle bells or something uber-Christmassy.
I like those ideas. They could've also started digging a hole and while each of them are standing around the hole, as one of them finishes digging the hole, they each discuss the morality of the situation and attempt to convince themselves that it's the right decision. After each one expresses their feelings the hobo shows up next them and asks them why they're digging a hole. Not entirely original but funny nonetheless.
