Doctor Strange spells (a comparison between versions)

The MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) is now somewhat infamous for down-playing the supernatural side of Marvel.

Marvel promised that their live action version of Doctor Strange would introduce the supernatural into the Marvel Cinematic Universe proper however even though the film deals with the origin story of Doctor Strange: Sorcerer Supreme, it still felt.. a little lacking despite mysticism being one of the film’s main themes.

So here is a comparison of the 2016 version of Doctor Strange’s spell casting as compared to the version of Doctor Strange in the 2007 animated movie.

Doctor Strange 2016 spells vs. Doctor Strange 2007 spells.

____________________________________________

2007:

Able to create portals in one place on Earth that open to another without the need of any sort of object to open the way.

Able to summon an actual sword into his hands via magick.

Able to read / enter other people’s minds and sense emotions.

Able to cast galmour spells (illusions / hiding spells)

Able to put someone to sleep via magick.

Hypnosis.

Able to transform swords into a colony of bats - Probably replacing the swords with an actual colony of bats that were near by it’s still transplanting matter with magick. Note: This spell could also have been an illusion to confuse his enemy.

The ability to enter dreams. - Doctor Strange uses magick to enter the dreams of his sleeping colleague.

Able to levitate without the need of The Cloak of levitation.

Able to create balls of magical flame in his hands.

Able to manipulate electricity in his hands.

Able to see ghosts.

Able to see through illusions and glamour spells.

Able to travel outside of his own body via astral projection.

Able to move objects with his mind.

Able to communicate telepathically.

Able to manipulate the elements of fire, water, earth, and air.

Able to create magical shields in front of or around himself and others.

Able to heal some small injuries in others.

Able to create emergy weapons via magick.

Able to enhance all of his spells with the amulet known as The Eye of Agamotto (not actually an infinity stone until the MCU).

2016

Astral projection - The Ability for Doctor Strange’s soul to travel outside of his own body. This power remains in tact in the 2016 Doctor Strange movie however, perhaps to appease the Chinese Market, the astral form of someone who has died immediately vanishes even for someone else on the Astral Plane which is… needless to say odd…

The ability to create energy weapons in his hands.

The ability to create magical shields by will.

Levitation - In the comics Doctor Strange could either levitate on his own or if he wants to conserve his strength he uses the cloak of levitation. In the 2016 film it’s purely the work of the apparently sentient cloak of levitation that he gains in the movie.

The ability to manipulate time and reverse time on specific objects or physical bodies of living beings, including himself. - Sadly the new film makes this power dependent on Doctor Strange’s amulet, which for the live action universe has been transformed into The Time Infinity stone.

Transforming a tea cup into a self-refiling mug of beer - Seen in the bonus scene of Doctor Strange Thor is provided with a mug of beer when he sulks that he does not like tea. The mug replenishes itself. This could easily be seen as time manipulation however if it was Thor would never be satisfied, nor would he ever feel the affects of the beer.

The ability to create portals to other parts of the world, other dimensions and alternate universes. - This is one of Doctor Strange’s biggest powers that he has in every incarnation to date however in the live action version the spell is dependent on a device called a “Sling Ring” which suspiciously and unpleasantly resembles alien tech from previous Marvel films where things that were genuinely magick in the comics were passed off as alien technology.

And of course his spells from the comics…

Same powers as listed above for the 2007 animated movie plus all of these…

Also he does not age in the comics and cannot die from disease. This power obviously does not exist in the 2016 movie and it’s simply not mentioned in the 2007 version. The 2016 version has it that the Ancient One had lived centuries by stealing power from The Dark Dimension whereas it’s something more innate for The Sorcerer Supreme in the comics.
