Who would've been a better DG?

Excellent movie, I loved it, however, I read a previous thread "terrible writing" where whoever wrote that made a very accurate point on the girl's..."Acting." Whew, I recorded tin man on my DVR, and at times, when she speak out a line, (forgive me if there's typo's, I'm using a microscopic keypad on a stupid BlackBerry--yuck!) Anyway, I'd hear her, and I'd rewind thinking, "did I hear that right?" Like when Zooey says so robotically, "Trickery? My parents are missing. I'm the victim of some natural disaster." And the stupid "tiny minds!" Line. WTF is up with her acting? Did the directer say here's your motivation; you're Doroty Gale n' stuff. So, act. And...Action!"??? There's some great talent in this adaptation of Oz, one of my favorite stories EVER, but I was dissapointed in DG's preformance, almost always poorly executed, so strangely monotone! Who do you guys think would've been a better DG?

I thought she was pretty good as DG and I think her "flat acting" was acting in itself. I think she was trying to portray a more "modern" Dorothy, with teenager sarcasm and such and perhaps a personality trait with some cynicism. Some lines that could've sounded unbelievable were tempered by her delivery. During the first part, it's also interesting how someone notes her "speech patterns" which could also be part of the reason she delivered her lines in the so-called monotonous, off-rhythm pace.

Those were my sentiments EXACTLY when I watched it the first time thru. Y'see, I like Zooey, she's got her own flavor, if u will as Dororthy "modern day DG" was even the exact phrase I thought to myself, (but I kinda have to think that in order to get past her strange line delivery, you know?) BUT, this generation of today's youth--me being a young adult I probably would've behaved a little bit simular too, if say, I were in her position as an actor, HOWEVER...(Don't get me wrong, 'cuz her acting becomes much improved and serious by the 2nd part of Tin Man) there's just something about her delivery that still bugs me during some crucial scenes. This movie is NOT a parody, nor a remake of the '39 Classic! Nor is it like the Disney-produced children's movie like the beloved "Return to Oz"--it's (in my opinion) one of the coolest, DARKEST and most mature & beautiful adaptaions of any Oz movie. So instead, I still think JUST a Liiiiittle bit less sarcasm replaced with a feeling of dread, confusion, maybe a little more fear and anger would've made the beginning more sutible and complete to the THICK, and I DO mean THICK plot! It's like Lord of the Rings-thick, or Dark Crystal, even as good as the darker Harry Potter flicks! It also kinda reminds me of Merlin with Sam Neil. Anyway, maybe it's a better thing that I can't think of an actress in particular who'd be a more fitting DG, probably because she suits the part. I sure hope I don't sound like those messagers on (fictional movie website) MoviePoopShoot.com, do I? LoL sorry for the lonnng reply, (remember it's on a phone and it takes forever 2 type, sorry.)

Yea, I guess I agree with that. I've only seen the movie once so far so maybe my perception would change upon second viewing. haha...and I have no idea what "MoviePoopShoot.com" is so I'm pretty sure I don't know if you sound like messagers there or not .

except she wasnt a teenager, she was at least 24 years old. its not acting cause she speaks very very flatly and unemotionally in every. single. movie. she. is. in.

The girl selling at the corner shop could act better.
She is atrocious, all the secondary characters played like De Niro compared to her.

Agreed. She was clearly directed to act that way, just as she and the other actors were directed to act in a similar way in the movie The Happening.

I also agree with your sarcasm comment, I think there was some intentionally irony put into the role of DG by the makers of Tin Man.

A better DG would have been Emily Deschanel

reply

Actually, I think it would have been cool for Emily to play Azkadelia. I could see her playing a villain, and she would've been believable as DG's sister because 1) they're sisters in real life and 2) they have similar vocal patterns (though I did like Kathleen Robertson in the role).

I know that this thread is old but I looked at my dvd and came back to the thread to reassure myself that I wasn't alone when it came to her acting.

As odd as this sounds I think a simple solution would have been to switch the actresses of DG and the sister (whose name I can not spell).

Since the age of DG doesn't seem to be a big problem Kathleen Robertson could have done it and produced the range of actions needed of DG if they were able to tone down her sex appeal and go without focusing on her cleavage so much.

Zooey's "flat" acting might have worked well for the witch granted she has a different costume. Given the witch would show little emotions and might be a bit unhinged and possibly neurotic with the witch pouring poison into her head it could have fit.

I'd kill to see an Oz related thread where no one suggest I see Wicked.

Zooey was wonderful as DG. She was very well done. But if I had to pick someone else, Kristen Stewart!!!
