Good, but the book is better...

This was a good one-off drama but it would have been better as a series. They just went through the story too quickly and didn't explore the relationship between Charlotte and Daniel in as great a depth as they could have done. But if you liked this, read the book. It's fantastic!

the relationship between Charlotte and *Daniel*?! I don't think that was really the point...

No, it wasn't. But it did make up a good part of the story and it was a part that I enjoyed.

What I'm saying is, although they covered the main important points, I personally would have preferred to see it played out like the book with more detail of the characters' backgrounds. That is my reason for believing that this could have been done really well as a series.

I agree, it did miss alot out from the book. The book is alot better but I think Catherine Tate played the part perfectly!

i adored the book. but thought the adaptation was very true to the book. agreed, catherine tate was fantastic. i think charlotte could have been played as a little more mature, with more of a head on her shoulders as i found her in the book. i didnt like how karens sturggle with the repercussions of her mothers stroke was cut to her just telling the doctor she was going to look after her, and nan just being at the party a couple of weeks later. that particular storyline in the book was well dealt with.

I think they should've made more of the meeting between Catherine Tate's character and her real mum - it was really too quick and did not give us much time to see what a monster the real mum was! We just got the hint of that, and then the scene was over, there should've been more coldness and shock value in the way the mum spoke to Karen, I think!

All movies made from books are never as good... So why complain about that all the time? Books have more detail and take time to explain things, lets not forget this was a movie... made as a one off. They didnt have the time... a movie cant explain things as books can...

But btw just so we are clear, Catherine was excellent but her damn daughter got on me nerves... Robert Pattinson was amazing thou... So geekally (yes i made up that word) sexy ;)!

I thought Catherine Tate, Holly Grainger and Robert Pattinson were ALL great.

It is true though, the story could definitely have done with a bit of filling out as it was just raced through and a lot of what I thought were great moments in the book were missed out. I did, however, like the way a lot of direct lifts were made from the book in to the dialogue and the way most of the major scenes were so similar to how they were described in the book as this often doesn't happen.

I haven't read the book, but my one criticism of this after I watched it was that Charlotte should have had a little more screen time (more equal to Karen) and also they should have spent a bit more time on her relationship with Daniel. Although that's mostly because the character was so hilarious, he had issues of his own (not resolved; is his family even going to stay?), and I thought they were ridiculously adorable together.

I agree the book is better but isn't that som often the case with film adaptations - they always leave a lot out. Time constraints I suppose.
I thought it would have been good to have included the financial windfall that Charlotte and her mother had in the form of the bonds that Daniel found. Also a bit more about the Grandmother's back ground would have been good. Purely because i am such a fan of Rob Pattinson - I would have like to have seen more of his relationship with Charlotte too.
They were all perfectly cast I thought.
