The Beginning and the Ending

First, Spoiler's abound so don't read on if you haven't seen the movie.

Anyhow, where in the time frame of the film is the beginning scene of Jonah and Dakota in the park supposed to take place? I just still can't make sense of Jonah describing what essentially ends up happening in the end as a dream. It feels so deliberately placed. Is it really just that the director/writer or whatever wanted it to be adorable as *beep* in the end? I feel like there might be something else going on but I can't quite place my finger on what.

My interpretation of the opening scene of Dakota and Jonah in the park is that it takes place right after Dakota arrives in New York and meet with Jonah at his place. Like that same evening or something. There was some time between the time he left her and the time she went and met with him. She learns to drive and all. So it sounds like he kept thinking and dreaming about her. That's what he's telling her about in the park.

I always just thought it was her dream of him saying that. So she decided to follow through, hoping he still felt the same about her. I'm not sure it ever actually happened.
