TIV design flawed?

One thing I find disturbing about the TIVs is that they appear to be designed for positive lift, not the negative lift that would better hold them to the ground. Instead of having rounded roofs it would seem that wide flat ones would work better. Even better might be a roof designed like a large spoiler.

I'm sure they'll get right on that.

What I'd like to see is wind tunnel tests of TIVs and an explanation of the aerodynamics. The large spoiler idea really wouldn't work with omni-directional winds.

Did you see the mythbusters episode? A 747 was used at full throttle to give a simulation of winds. Reed's little red shoe darn near got blown away while the TIV sat and took it like a boss.

I looked for that 747 vs. TIV video on the discovery website. This is as close as I could find. The TIV2 tour was also interesting. TIV2 has a flatter roof than the first one. The reason I don't like a bubble roof is that aerodynamically it speeds the airflow over the top of the vehicle providing uplift.

Just wondering, how would they be able to efficiently chase tornadoes in vehicles that have the profile and ground clearance of a Lamborghini? Are you some kind of engineer, or just another one of those forum posters that has everything figured out because he's got a degree in something? I'm confused.

reply

No aeronautical degree here. TIV2 adequately combines ground clearance with shielding while the vehicle is stopped. You can't have it both ways. My main concern is with rounded tops that have some of the negative effects of an airfoil.

Talk to Sean Casey. He's accessible. But I really think he'll just it roll off his shoulders. He built a vehicle that has proved itself mightily.

I saw it take on a 747's jet blast on mythbusters it even bent those spikes they put in the ground. Im sure it can take a good strong wind.

not that they will ever be close enough they suck with his back sat driving.
