My favorite part of Season One was Lena -- should I keep watching?

**** SPOILER ****

I liked Season One best for the Lena character (Stina Rautelin). I did not know of her as an actress but, in my opinion, she really made the show compelling.

Should I keep watching? I see they bring her back -- but in a meaningful way? I hope it is as Beck's boss!

I have to watch a lot of episodes before then. Is it worth it?

reply

I liked Lena too, but I thought the show as a whole was excellent. Altho I missed her when she was gone, I was quite happy to continue watching the show. Beck and Larsson work well together, the contrast between the two personalities making for an interesting relationship.

I also enjoyed Beck's daughter, Inger, who knew how to press Beck's buttons, and she was in most of the episodes. Beck's neighbor could get tiresome, but even he had some funny scenes.

Another woman takes Lena's place for a while, Alice Levander, and she's also good.

reply

I'm up to Season 2, episode 3 and Alice Levander is growing on me. I still don't like her as well as Lena but, in a way, they've made her a more rounded character.

And I like how they have softened he Larsson character. I miss is menacing but it's better that he is a little vulnerable.

reply

Yes, I found Larsson an intriguing character. He's undoubtedly a boor, and a loose cannon, but, as long as Beck can keep him on a leash, he's a good cop and someone you'd want around in a tight spot.

Plus, as the series progresses, we see another side of him, which gives him more depth.

Levander is a good character, and Lena does return, however briefly, but definitely, Beck focuses on two characters, Beck and Larsson, opposites in many ways, but their differences complement each other on the job, and despite their often adversarial relationship, when the chips are down, they can count on each other.

I don't know why Lena's character left, altho I would imagine that budget played a large part. If that was the fact, then the show's creators had no choice but to concentrate on a smaller number of regulars. I think they did a great job.

i recomend not wasting time on any movie after part 8
there is not a single good scene in any of the movies after that

reply

I disagree. First, the relationship between Beck and Larsson is always enjoyable.

Also, while I enjoyed every film, I thought the following were better than many:

#19: "Gamen" ["The Vulture"]
#20: "Advokaten" ["The Lawyer"]
#21: "Den japanska shungamålningen" ["The Japanese Etching"?]
#23: "Det tysta skriket" ["The Silent Shriek"–scream, cry?]

And I think that #22: "Den svaga länken" was very good.

Haven't seen the most recent ones, but I'm looking forward to when they become available in the States.

reply

good for you
(its svaga länken not sväga lanken, but good try)
the 4th season came in 2010 or so and has 2 films
right now there is a 5th season with 4 films released so far and 4 that are being filmed, the last four will not include gunvald though (the actor went to prison for drug use)

i just personally think sweden makes to many cop movies, its gone so far that new ideas get rejected in favor of cop movies, not only beck but about 15 other simmilar series and cheap knock offs, thats what annoys me here

reply

Thanks for the correction. I don't speak Swedish, so I appreciate your help.

I guess I can understand your frustration, if Swedish viewers are inundated with cop shows. Certainly, that's what is largely available from Sweden here in the US.

However, not being limited to Swedish films and tv, I'm not tired of Swedish cop dramas, especially because I think they do them so well.

Sorry to hear about Persbrandt. I think he's a good actor. I've also seen him in Hævnen, which I enjoyed.

Yes, I've seen the 4th season. The ones after that are the ones that, so far, have not become available here. There's a US tv station, MHz Networks, which shows international mysteries in the evenings. That's where I first encountered Beck, and many other European shows. I'm hoping that the new Beck films will be shown on MHz soon.

reply

yeah persbrandt is allright i admitt
i heard he will be replaced by some actor from norway or something, probably a brand new character

well enjoy the 5th season, i know i wont (but i allways finnish what i start so ill see them anyway), but thats okay cause fortunatly you americans provide us with some great entertainment that sweden failed to provide for me lately

reply

And now we are up to season 6 ...for you to suffer through yor enjoy..depending....
