Gunvalds Fate

Just watched the first Ep of the new season. I knew before already that Gunvald is going to die. So I waited a while to watch it and finally did last night.

Not only let they Gunvald die, no....he never even got a fighting chance and just got more or less shot in the back after a minute of screentime.

Mikael Persbrandt was always doing a great job portraying Gunvald. He was the perfect opposite to Martin Beck and great together as a team. Of course, you could say he was a bit of "though-cop" cliché, but Mikael Persbrandt did act so well and has a great screen presence, I never did mind....even it was a bit over the top sometimes.

My wife and me mostly did watch because of Gunvald (even though P. Haber acts good as well). Now he's gone....and I'm very very sure I won't watch the new season. I'm sure the "New Guy" Kristofer Hivju will do a fine job. He's lots of fun in GoT....but he's no Gunvald. I'll keep re-watching the old seasons.

I'm not sure what happens in the book. Not sure Gunvald is dead or alive there. But I don't care. Screenwriters never really follow books fully, so why kill him off? Did something happen behind the scenes? Or does Persbrandt want to focus more on other projects (I'd understand that at least).

Hopefully we'll see more of Persbrandt somewhen and somewhere.

Another user and I were wondering the same thing--if Persbrandt may have been on bad terms with people behind the scenes, as his departure was so weirdly handled, according to what I've read about this episode.

Not in a hurry to see it, myself--it sounds pretty bad. I like Peter Haber quite a bit, and I might watch some of the newer eps whenever MHz starts running them, but Mikael will be sorely missed. I'd heard some rumors a while back that the character might be spun off into his own series, but I'd suppose that would be totally off the table now. No matter--I'll still seek out his other work, and anything new he might be doing. I like his screen presence very much, and thought he definitely put Beck a cut above what it might have been otherwise.

Must have been something behind the scenes. Persbrandt did have some little drug problems in the past not long ago. Maybe it's that.....but how many actors did worse and still get jobs. Too bad really.

A spin-off would have been fantastic. Does - like you said - not look good now. And I don't think they'll change their minds and go for something like that he didn't really die and just disappeared for some undercover job (which would make a nice spin-off).

Persbrandt really had a huge screen presence and I really wish him well with some more and other movie projects. Until then at least there are still the old Eps to watch.
