Why is it called 'Once'??

Yeah why?? Why do you think they gave it that title?? I love the soundtrack by the way.

Something probably along the lines of two people meeting each other on the street randomly, coming together, connecting, and writing songs together, and making beautiful music only happens "Once" in a lifetime.

Good summary. Also, "I was romantic ... once".

Aye Payton is right, it refers to the character's thoughts, "Once I get out of here.." "Once I get money.." "Once s/he comes back.." etc. The director said so in the commentary.

Well, the tagline of the film says "How often do you find the right person? "
So "once" could be the answer to that.

If you listen to the commentary on the Dvd, it is clearly explained. The story was written thinking of the many people who intend to pursue their dreams "Once" this or that happens. Eventually too many things come up and that "Once" falls back and back into the future before eventually fading away permanently. Here, the protagonist, does get around to it; he quits working in his father's shop, records the album, and leaves London to pursue his dream, albeit with other issues fogging up his life.

Ultimately, it is a haunting and beautiful story that I think many of us can relate to. As for myself, "Once" I finish law school, Once I set up a practice, Once I am able to support and stabilize my family's future, I'll go back to my passion, editing and publishing stories. As this story indicates, who knows if that will ever actually happen for me.

Ah, now that's the best answer yet. I cannot put my finger on it, but this movie has touched something very deep inside me. What do you think it might be?

@nyccaffrey: Your prostate?? (Sorry couldnt resist).
Im a Dub living in NZ and I just watched it for the first time. I think it was a pretty special movie. A pretty simple story about 2 people falling in love but meeting at the wrong time in their lives. I think people can relate to that. I know I can.
Ultimately they're brief relationship brings about changes in their lives that enables them to take that "next step" that they've been avoiding (Guy - recording music, going to London to make a go with the ex, Girl - get her husband over from Czech to make a life with the kid). Simple, familiar themes played by realistic, flawed characters. I think that's why it struck a cord with me.
Reminds me a lot of High Fidelity, another great movie based around a broken relationship with a awesome music backdrop. Very different movie but similar themes. Check it out.

Marge: This is terrible! How will the kids get home?
Homer: I dunno. Internet?

Hope and the possibility of good things are within your grasp. They aren't just concepts, they are real, and they are waiting for you and the people you know.

There is most usually a blue moon once a year. Movies like this are much rarer.

Can't you guys freaking read? Right here on its IMDB page it explains the title:

"The title refers to the many very talented artists that John Carney knew who put off their career by saying "once" they get this and that sorted out, but never succeed because they've put it off too long. This describes the lead character, The Guy."
