Did he buy the piano for her?

Guy walks into the music shop and asks to have a word with the seller. Then a piano shows up at the Girl's flat. Maybe it was obvious but I kind of dozed off around this time. Anyway I though the guy was almost pennyless so how could he afford the piano?

reply

I assumed that the bank loan he took out would have taken care of some, if not all of it.

reply

That and maybe the money he got from his dad.

There were some other other awkward details that kill suspension of disbelief but I forgive the film for all of them.

You gotta love a shoestring project like this when it ends up doing so well. It didn't need scary slasher scenes (Halloween), car chases or gun play.

Why would it? It's a romantic musical...

Go back to your bridge, troll! You have no power here!

I also asked this question to myself and I also think that it is probably the money his dad gave him that he used to buy the piano for her.

reply

Well, yes..but he had to accept 'a couple of hundred' from his Dad as a deposit on a flat.. Thats euros as well.. I doubt that he could get a piano for anything like that, let alone have any left for the flat deposit (perhaps he will end up selling big Issue in london?).. But this is nit picking. It was a huge romantic gesture we should perhaps just accept.

I had the impression that he was going to be moving in with his ex. No deposit necessary. The money from his dad coupled with whatever was left over from the bank loan could have covered the piano.

reply

His dad gave him a lot of money.

"Joey, have you ever been in a Turkish prison?"

reply

Well, although he wasn't rich, he wasn't poor either. He worked in his fathers shop + busking. I'd think anybody in Ireland could afford pianino in that situation.

Music dealers often have used instruments they're selling on consignment. He got her an upright, not a concert grand. A used one really isn't that expensive.

reply

Yeah, it was not a brand new piano. I am sure that the piano was not all that expensive, but I believe that he loved her so much that he would have spent every last extra dollar that he had (after the expenses that he needed to get to London?) to buy her the piano. Such a tearjerker movie. I loved the movie so much. By the way, I do not consider the movie to be a musical. I really never liked musicals, because the characters always break out into musical singing at any odd time. Musicals really annoy me. This movie was not a musical. It was a romantic drama (about 2 musicians that meet and fall in love, while creating great music). Very big difference in my opinion.

He was prepared to pay 3k for the studio and due to the Girls fierce negotiating he got it for 2k. In addition he got some cash from his dad and might of sold some stuff. His room was filled with stuff yet he had nearly no baggage at the airport. Also he most likely had some savings on his own as he lived with his Dad and had a job.
