was expecting this to be pretty legit-and after all the discussion and my viewing i think i can sum it up in two words....dumb N weird. this really wasnt good and i was hoping for a lot, and expectations dont come into play, it was just bad. kill bill in every way kills this movie. Waste of time for real. They couldve made it very memorable and good but its just not.

Yea I saw the trailer and was pretty excited. Looked pretty badass...but just done wrong in the end. Cool action and thats it. I think if they had spoke japanese instead of having the actors basically phonetically trying to pronounce the english lines, and didnt have that "japanese" comedy in the movie...it would have been alot better.

sharewell to appreciate it you have to view it more as just a beautiful blending of the Japanese Samurai film and the Spaghetti Western. It's not exactly the best script writing I've ever seen, but the overall imagery was great. Those odd sound effects kinda threw off though, wasn't a fan of that part. Overall I loved the film though.

Exactly, all style and no substance, and it was way to goofy for me to appreciate it purely for its style a la real spaghetti westerns. More of a yakuza film than anything, theres very little to do with samurai in this movie, and the western references are pretty cosmetic. It isn't exactly a disappointment since I knew from seeing the trailer that this would be one of Miike's weaker efforts.
shareyup like what most people said, all style no substance. i didn't give a $hit about any of the characters. the only cool part was when the grandma revealed she was a badass and that's only cause she looked cool. the sets were nicely done and the costumes were well made, but the story was crap. dialogue was crap and i probably would've enjoyed it if they spoke in japanese. i like Tarantino films but his cameo sucked. i don't care if he's a huge fan of Miike or if they are bff's but he didn't belong and it just seemed like he begged Miike to be in the film so he could look cool and pretend he's a cowboy.

I love Italian westerns (Django, Keoma, Face to face, A bullet for the general, The good, the bad and the ugly, etc.), but a wannabe cult movie, made in the 21st Century by a Japanese cult director, with English dialogues spoken by Japanese actors, featuring the most overrated director in history (and one of the worst actors of all time) even if it's for a few seconds... Nope, I'll pass on this one.
I didn't like The good, the bad and the weird. I'll stick with Sammo Hung's Shanghai express (Millionaires' Express)!
It was definitely different. Would not say it was garbage tho. Think i needed a little more background to know what was going on. It was average 5.0 / 10.0

IMO, the plot is utterly bland, with very little originality. The mix of wacky comedy with deadly serious acting by some actors just doesn't work (the classic The Good, The Bad and The Ugly mixed humor and drama really well.)

I thought it was pretty good. It's more of an homage than a movie on its own, sort of taking a cliche spaghetti western and spinning it with japanese over the top style.
If youve watched a lot of westerns i dont see how you can really call this garbage, it makes some great references to leone, and even back to kurosawa.
if its the plot that gets you, then let me be the first to tell you that he quite obviously wasnt going for originality. this movie has been remade at least 3 times, originally the plot is heavily from Yojimbo by Kurosawa, which the characters actually directly say in the beginning.
Finally, to those who say its garbage, if you pick up a Takashi Miike movie hoping to see the good the bad and the ugly, then you are looking in the wrong place. Seriously, leone and miike are polar opposites when it comes to directing style.
you can still hate it all you want, just wanted to say if you know a bit about westerns and know what to expect from miike its a fun movie and worth watching.
edit: as for the cheesy sound effects, if you remember the gunshots from tgtbatu, they sound the same, and a lot of the sound effects are from old school westerns, which i think is just another instance of miike giving his tribute to the genre.
