Tarantino's character says this towards the end of the movie when the name akira is mentioned.
Does anyone know what this means ?
For some reason i was thinking it references the japan anime movie "Akira"
Also at the end battle did anyone else get reminded of Cowboy Bebops end fight with Vicious vs Spike.

An "otaku" is an anime fanboy/girl, so an "anime otaku" is a bit redundant...though I had the impression that "otaku" could refer to anyone obsessed with anything (e.g., manga, anime, musicians, etc.).
Which is correct?
I thought it was there to break the fourth wall in a numerous way, hence why the other character says "What?" afterwards. I found it pretty funny because it was so random and out-of-place.

Actually no. Otaku in general basically means obsessive fan. Obsessive fan of whatever the person is into. The movie Otaku No Video explains this pretty well.
Funny line though totally fitting the wonderful tongue in cheek nature of the movie.

Actually the OP was completely right, the line was delivered to explain why Tarrantino's character named his son Akira. Akira (the movie) was one of the first animes to hit the States and was what really opened up the West to anime in general. So yeah, Tarrantino was paying homage to Akira.

eh.. I think there's a second meaning in that Akira Kurosawa directed Yojimbo which is the original movie that SWD is sort of based on.. He very well could have meant it both ways though.

Nice catch. It sounds weird to say now because it's so obvious, but I never noticed that; I guess because it's obvious he's talking about the anime and it's almost like "Akira" the anime and "Akira" in Akira Kurosawa are two different words. Like Mike Jones the jazz musician and Mike Jones the rapper. Weird comparison, I know, but it was the first one that sprang to mind.
