Jack and Jill

I saw this short down in Miami. It was a finalist in some contest that was open to up-and-coming filmmakers in the state of Florida. I think they showed about a dozen shorts and then had judges from Miramax and HBO vote. Some of the movies were pretty good, most were very amateurish. I was surprised that Jack and Jill didn't win any awards that night. It should have won something, it was really good.

I'm not surprised this didn't win some contest in "Miami." They're a joke down there. They're nothing but a bunch of self-absorbed primadonnas. They all think their you-know-what doesn't stink. The whole state of Florida is a big joke when it comes to filmmaking. They've been talking about Florida being the next big state in film production for the last fifteen years, and look at what is produced there. The Blair Witch Project was seven years ago, True Lies was 12 years ago, and Cape Fear was 15 years ago. What else they got? The fact that "Jack and Jill" didn't win some contest in Miami is actually a compliment.

I was at "An Afternoon With Kevin Smith" in Orlando a couple of months ago, and Jack and Jill was one of the ten finalsists for the film competition there. They didn't even show all the finalsists, and the winner was some RAP VIDEO!? What a joke! That's why Florida is in the state it's in, with no respect from the film community at large. Because they allow stupid things like this to happen to filmmakers who are legitimately trying to foster a career while stuck in Florida! The problem of course arises when these talented filmmakers get fed up and move to a state that actually supports the arts, instead of worrying about lining their pockets with kick-back money or doing a favor for the film student son of their golf buddy. Sad.

If somebody wanted to get independent films produced in Florida, who or where would they go to for help? There must be some help available! Is it all just straight-to-video horror trash with gore and naked bodies? There has to be some artists in the state.

I think the problem here in Florida is funding. It's just not a movie making state. It appears to be a state where low buget films are being spit out, and the type you described. I saw Jack and Jill, with some funding and additional material that could easily fill a T.V. 30 minute time slot. The only thing is you will have to do it in spanish for Telemundo.
