The white guy on the airplane

He looked racist just by the facial expressions he had when Sheila tried to sit next to him.

he was a jerk.

Why was he a jerk? He paid just as much money for his plane ticket as Sheila did. Why should he have to suffer through an uncomfortable plane ride just to accommodate a woman who can't properly fit in her seat? It isn't his fault she is heavy-set and it isn't his fault she didn't have the forethought to buy an extra seat for herself.

reply

He surely did pay his fare and did deserve to have a comfortable (if any coach ride can be called that) trip. However, there was no need for the exaggerated look of exasperation and disgust on his face. If that were me, I think I probably would have asked her if she would mind removing her jacket, and probably would have relented and suffered through the flight if I knew she would have to drive as a result of my complaint. A little discomfort by itself never killed anyone.

That's not to say I think someone would be wrong to demand her to buy another seat, I think most people would.

He was a jerk. Had that had been an overweight WHITE woman, he would have sat his happy racist behind there and not said a word. You could tell by his expression that he was racists.

reply

Didn't look racist. What does a racist look like? His facial expressions were part of the script to denote that he hated the fact that he had to sit next to a fat woman. Obesity prejudice is just as damning as racial prejudice.

I dated a woman who hated fat people. For her it was hate at first sight. They disgusted her. She was one of those people who was foolish enough to believe that all fat people are fat because they stuff fatty foods into their faces all day long and don't do any exercise. When in fact, she was one of those people who grazed all day and didn't do any exercise. She was just fortunate enough to have a good metabolism. She would always make excuses and say that she was very active when in fact she wasn't, however, she did eat good food but not always. Then she would defend her insults by saying she knew people who died of obesity and she was just giving some tough love to get them to lose weight.

reply

I didn't think it was meant to be a race issue, I think it was strictly a matter of her weight. One of the few prejudices that seem to be socially acceptable is obesity prejudice.

reply

Y'all are misusing the word prejudice since it means prejudging (assuming all people of one race have a certain characteristic) but in the case of fat people that IS their characteristic. All fat people are fat.

As for the expression, the actor performed just the expression the director told him to.
