top litigator,top architect,top pediatrician,best selling author?COME ON

This is an ongoing theme in black movies. Not being in touch with the reality of the black world. All of these "top" people these success stories that can'r be found in any race in such a concentration yet they're found in this group of black people? Let's play the odds in the real world. Tere has to be at least on ex con and a crackhead in the bunch.

I know the news always depicts blacks negatively, however, there could easily be a group of black friends who went to college together and supported one another throughout the years and all end up being successful.

Yes, it is true that where we come from makes a difference and I know the sociologists say that in general you never rise above the economic circumstances form which you came, however, I believe choice plays more of a key role.

As I said before, trompos...watch the hundreds of other "In da Hood" movies out there if watching a bunch of professional African Americans is so far from reality for you.

If anything, what's wrong with showing from successful African Americans in movies, even if it such a rare thing in reality? Wouldn't it be better to paint a more positive picture for the younger generations? To plant in thier head that with hard work they can be successful, instead of constantly beating over thier heads that the only way to escape their situation will be to become a rap or sports superstar, or marry one?

Nothing, but let's not make it childish and silly. Why couldn't you have a writer, adoctor and a lawyer, and a hair dresser. Instead everyone is on this crazy level. You're not just a doctor, you're a super rich super successful doctor, not just a writer, a BEST SELLING author, not just a hair dresser but a world renowned super rich inventor/hairdresser.

Why is that childish and silly? Why can't the message be young black Americans should strive to be as successful as possible? Again, I'm going to suggest if it's so hard for you to see successful African-Americans, you should stick to the ghetto fabulous ones out there.

Where did you get that there he super rich successful Doctor? I saw success (as Doctors make a lot of money), but it's not like they were in some sprawling mansion.

Sheila didn't seem to have much of anything except for being married to Mike.

Did Janet's character say Angela was a world renowned inventor? My hairdresser has made her own hair care products as well. She mostly sells it within her shop, which has been going strong for 30 years. She's not super rich or super famous, but she's very comfortable.

Honestly, I saw a lot of success, but I didn't see anything that indicated super wealth.

Uhm, racist much?

reply

And if there were an ex con and crackhead, they obviously overcame their past and moved onto a better life!

reply

Usually there are always some ex-cons and money grubbers trying to bring a brotha or sista down.

try moving to DC, LA or NY and you'll realize that a this scenario is not at all unrealistic...

reply

I live in NYC and yeah, it VERY unrealistic. While there are SOME very successful black they are not THAT successful in large numbers, it would be just as unrealistic if they were all white, all asian, all hispanic.

I’m from New York, have family and friends all up and down the east coast and a few scattered in the west and again, I’m telling you it’s not unrealistic at all.

I’m still waiting for you to describe what exactly made Terry a “super rich” doctor, and why this group of characters (less than ten people) all being successful is such a large number for you. I’m sorry, I’m having doubts you are actually from NYC.

i guess you just need to expand your NYC world a little bit then...sorry, they are out there in LARGE numbers. we must hang with different crowds i suspect.

From all these posts I can understand that you are not black nor know ANYTHING about the community. You should've looked a little closer into the movie than the color of the actors skins. When Terry && Gavin are sitting in the living room, Terry asks Gavin "Would you have ever believed we would have been as successful as we are?" They may not be the EXACT quote, but close to it. And it is true. Many blacks do not hold the super-high ranks in professions, which is such a shame. But this is just a few friends from college who worked hard, prayed and believed in God to make their dreams a reality. You make it seem like half the black population is in the film && all of them have high-ranked professions. Also, a black stereotype WAS included, Marcus having a ghetto, crazy ass baby mama. I think that's good enough of a stereotype.

I also agree with the other posters, the film did not say that they were extraordinally successful. Diane is a partner at a firm. It could just be an important one in her city. Terry owns his own practice. 1st off it is hard to become a doctor much less start your OWN practice and keep it running for however many years he has had it. Again, it could be a city-wide thing. Angela owns her salon with her own hair care products. If you were to go to an authentic all black hair care place, there are WALLS of different hair care products. Lady Angie could just be another jar on the wall. Patricia has a best-selling book and has also won an award but on in the Psychology part.

There are top lawyers, architects, pediatricians and authors in the "Black world." It's not YOUR reality but don't assume it's not others'.

Last films seen:
Brothers - 8/10
Up In The Air - 9/10
Invictus - 8/10

Wouldn't it make sense that they're all together because they're wealthy? The rich keep the rich company. There are a number of well-off black families in my area (which is a wealthy, mostly white area) who hang out socially a lot. I think it would be less realistic if you had doctors, lawyers, and some mediocre, middle-class teacher or something. Afterall, they are on an expensive vacation where they all have to pay their own way, you'd have to have money to afford that.

reply

This type of thinking(thread starter) is what kept "boomerang" as one of Eddie Murphy's lowest grossing films.

All Black professional setting,Eddie as a corporate guy,......some white people just couldn't/didn't want to swallow that.

Makes them feel uncomfortable.....rather see "jive talk" from the 70s and cliched characters.

I'm not a fan of Tyler Perry's films, but some folks out there have skewed ideas of what's "realistic" and what's not

reply

it kinda reminds me how on sex and the city all of them are so successful in all entirely different fields and all stay friends. if they were all working together, it would make way more sense.

Old thread but just have a comment.
While I don't know how realistic it is to have a group of black successful professionals who hang out with each other but I do notice this recurring theme in many black movies, all main characters are either lawyers or doctors or med students, it's like they're trying to make a point. Most movies aren't like this. That is all.

Can you name SOME of these MANY "black" movies? Because i cant think of many
