We saw the Freaks, and the Freaks are US!

We Saw the Freaks and the Freaks are Us!

Why are we afraid or repulsed by those who are different then us? Why do we cringe when we see human “oddities” doing mundane things?

Recently I visited the “Freakshow,” 2007, IMDB comment page, there I saw so many negative comment, some of them filled with hate, and I wanted to know why was there such a reaction to this movie, “Freakshow” by The Asylum Studios.

The movie it self, even though not the best film out there, was not that bad. So, why is there such an unreasonable hostility toward this film?
Because, I realized, they are not angry at the movie, the real live Freaks in the movie terrifies them! It‘s this fear of what is different, out of the norm for them that make them so incensed toward “Freakshow” (The Asylum, 2007).

You see, this century there have been other movies with the same theme, one called “SideShow” (Full Moon Pictures), another one called “Freakshow” (Arrow Home Entertainment Inc. 2001) and people loved them, however, these movies did not have “Real” freaks. The movies had gaffs and grifts, made up freaks.

“Freakshow” (2007) has “REAL” freaks. Tom Devlin is a great make-up artist and FX guy. He did not make Jim Gold Man (The Great Riwami) an armless wonder, Jim was born that way. Bill Quinn (Chef) needs no special effects to appear legless. Jeffrey Allen, (The Strong Man) is truly built that way. Margaret the Cannibal Girl, played by Amanda Ward, smiles as bright in real life. McKenna Geu, AKA Little Kimmie, is really as adorable. The suspension guys’ hooks really did go through their flesh, and their tattoos are real. That is Chris Adamson's REAL tooth you see there. VeeKay (Wolf Man) is a sideshow curiosity, once known as The Wild Boy and Dieguito el Negrito in South America. Larry “The wolf Boy” Gomez was born with hypertrichosis. That facial hair is 100 per cent real! And, speaking of faces. The most tragic of them all is "the outside talker." That is the outside talker’s (the barker) real face. He could be hiding somewhere, or covering his face, a face that only a wife could love, but he is brave enough to go out in public that way. Even appearing in movies and talk shows to show that it is okay to be different. But I digress.

Why are they so angry at these freaks, these disabled or unusual people? Because they realize that if not for fate, choice, or accident they themselves could have been one of these freaks. And that terrifies them. Thus, their fear turns to hatred, as they are not able to express their fears, or unwilling to admit that the freaks makes then uncomfortable.

Because they do not want it to be known of the prejudice toward those of us who are different, they turn their anger toward the movie.

Having grown up in the sideshow, performing with other special people, AKA freaks, I saw this hatred. Not while we were performing, No, they paid money to see us. However, when we were out in the “real” world, shopping, playing, going to the movie, etc. That’s when we saw their prejudice toward us. You see. Some people would like for us to go away. Locked up somewhere where they do not have to see us. Where they do not have to think of us as “people.”

We are people. We are like most of you. We have feelings, we fall in love, we have families, we cry, we laugh, we go on diets, and we even have “cell phones!” As Shylock said, “If you prick us, do we not bleed” or feel pain? Well, actually, if you are the “suspension guys” (piercing people) the answer may be, no.

Instead of hating us, give thanks that you are who you are, as we give thanks that we are alive, able to work, support ourselves, our families, performing in the sideshow, circus, even movies. So, enjoy "Freakshow."

What I am trying to say is, you are we, and we are you.

Wow! That came from the heart!

I for myself was moved by your article. My heart goes out to all the performers and especailly for the barker.

You are so right about the fear of freaks making the people hate the movie.

Did it ever occur to you that people hated this movie cause it was a horrible movie? Defend this movie and why it "wasn't that bad."

People are hostile because they elected to post "Banned in 43 countries" on the box cover to entice people to rent this crap. Granted, people should be more angry with themselves for falling for such an obvious stunt.

My mother says your are patronizing the performers the same way people who pretend they don't like gays, would say, "My best friend is gay."

reply

I agree.

Urgh. I'm not moved by this pretentious post at all.

I have a disabled sister. I've volunteered at her physio, I've interacted with all kinds of people with physical and mental disabilities. How condescending and presumptious can you be to say that everyone who hated this film is unaccepting of "different people". God forbid people found the script boring, violence uncomfortable, cinematography dull and disliked being blatantly lied to regarding the 'banned in 43 countries' schtick.

There was nothing enjoyable about this movie. And it had nothing to do with the "freaks" and how much I was "terrified" by them.

So what you are saying that you were indeed terrified by them?
I was only terrified by the goons.

reply

No, I am not saying that. Hence the quotation marks?

AMEN! I couldn't have said it better!

I'm sorry you had to deal with people's crap growing up...Gotta ask a corny but true question: Why can't we just celebrate the fact that there are so many different kinds of people in the world, with many different minds, hearts, and bodies? There's beauty in every kind of body...including the bodies those who are so different from the "norm" that we call them "freaks"?

And why can't we realize the so called "freaks" are, as you say, us and we are them...We're all just people...Some are kind(Simon Metz a/k/a/ Schlitzie, I've heard, was a very sweet and gentle man), some are cruel (Grady Stiles a/k/a/ Lobster Boy comes to mind here)...and most are somewhere in between. Everyone has good days and bad...Everyone breathes; goes to the bathroom; gets sick; has emotions, drives, thoughts, flaws...and we all have our own "inner freak" regardless of what we look like on the outside...Most of us are too cowardly to even acknowledge it, though, much less share it with others. Sad.

Re: cringing at this movie: I cringed at the "wedding party scene" when Lucy went all rude bitch on the guests...They seemed like nice people, who took care of each other like a true family ...so damn! Give me the cup! I would have been honored to be included in such a tight knit family of good people.(I thought the same thing in the same scene in the original "Freaks"...Maybe I'm weird?)

Having been on the board and seen the people's reactions to the last 10 mins of the film, I knew it would be disturbing and brutal and kind of dreaded it...after seeing the party scene, I was almost looking forward to it. (Still kind of looked away though...too much for me!:P)

And yeah...I prefer a film with actors/actresses who really have the physical characteristics and conditions their characters have, actually ... Unless it's something painful for the person, the extremes to which our bodily differences can go is a beautiful thing!

More authentic too, and nothing's worse than seeing people who fit the same Hollywood mold in every damn movie you see (I've actually watched horror movies and had to say "Which character was that that just died? I can't tell those three guys apart..."... Nothing's more annoying or depressing. Can't say I had that problem with this film :)) I'd rather be watching a person you might call a "freak" than one of these carbon-copy, look-, act- and sound-alike "Hollywood hotties" any day. :)

I consider myself to be a well adjusted man. I adore my beautiful wife. We enjoy life, loving and learning new things. We are active and have good jobs. We are caring responsible, intelligent, people. I am happy to be who I am and I wouldn’t want to be any one else.

Smoke me a kipper. I’ll be back for breakfast
