**DISCLAIMER**

This isn't so much a comment as it is a warning.
I've been watching horror movies since I was able to watch movies. I have them on tapes and dvds, I was originally going to school for forensic science (I'm telling you guys this to explain that I DO have the stomach, strength, etc to watch horror movies/gore/etc).
This movie sent me to therapy. Seriously. It effected me in such a way that I still can't sleep (it's now exactly one week after I rented this movie). I'm anxious, nervous, and the day after I watched this movie I had a panic attack and had to schedule an emergency appointment to speak with a psychiatrist.
The last ten minutes of this movie are THE most disturbing ten minutes I have ever seen in absolutely any form (film, photography, written word, etc.)
Just typing about it and making me think about it is making me start to get anxious.

Oddly enough everyone I watched it with was totally unaffected by it. My boyfriend doesn't understand why he has to stay awake with me every night.
But for some reason, the last scene hit me in a way no movie, no book, no image has ever effected me before. Not hostel, or the hills have eyes, or house of 1000 corpses, or texas chainsaw massacre, or any other horror flick involving torture/gore/disturbing images.

Maybe I'm the only one, but I can understand why it was banned.
This is NOT a joke. I'd appreciate if you don't respond with "u'r an idiot this movie suKKd." As I said, apparently a lot of people were unphased by Freakshow. I am not one of those people.
Anyone with me?

If you watch the behind the scenes, it might help you feel better. They show you how they did it and how it was fake. It made me feel better seeing how it was done and knowing that it was fake.

I too have been watching horror movies since I was in Kindergarten (thanks to my great babysitter!). I'm pretty much desensitized to most things horror. That said, those last 10 minutes freaked me out as well! I'm not scared or paranoid about it, just brutally disturbed! It's a mixed bag of feelings, but watching the behind the scenes feature did help a lot! I will NOT be attending any circuses or freakshows in the near future, or maybe EVER! But that's ok because I'm creeped out by clowns anyway! Do what I do! Throw in "Dead Alive" and blood and guts become fun again!

reply

I think the reason why the ending freaked so many people out is because you have no warning that this scene is about to happen. Most of the film is relatively calm and mild and then this hits you're senses without any warning.

Also, the way the whole family come together to dish out the punishment, you don't expect this as most of the time you think of these people as harmless.

Also just the matter-of-factly the way they punish the girl, like no fuss or sense of what they are doing is wrong. Rather than shock and loud music in other horror films, the scene is played out as a mundane run of the mill act, but it's far from that.

That's why it's so shocking.

reply

hahahahah what's really really funny about that (jjjberkenstock) is that i DID watch dead alive immediatly after watching freakshow. thank god for that movie.
haha

I know what you mean. My mom forbids me from watching it again because she says it gives me nightmares. So I just go to a friends house and try to watch it there.

could somebody please tell me where i can see the behind the scenes in hopes that i will be able to sleep sometime soon i saw the movie three weeks ago and it just keeps running over and over in my head i actually had to throw up after i saw it and i have been watching horror movies since i was five. i don't know what to do and im never going near a circus

reply

The behind the scenes are to me the best part of this movie so you have to rent the dvd to see the behind the scenes.

reply

i just want to say to the OP that you are definitely NOT alone. i watched it last night i literally felt incredibly ill to my stomach afterward. i love horror, and i totally WAS prepared for the scene cuz that was the entire reason why i got the movie - i had heard that the end of it was one of the best horror scenes of all time! boo on that decision....i had trouble sleeping last night too, and now that you mention it couldve been because of the movie, maybe it had me to frazzled to relax. anyways, just wanted to let you know that you are not alone.

I'll second that warning. It's disturbing. I didn't mind seeing the scene once, but the image stuck with me and after a few days, I started to get annoyed seeing "Worm girl" when I went to sleep.

A few splatter classics made gore fun again though.

reply

Probably because that girl did nothing to warrant the fate handed to her added to your reaction. I did not like the suggestion that those who are born differently are psychotics. (I dislike Freaks for the same reason, but that is nowhere as vicious as this crapshow.) And it wasn't a good film. Asylum Films are, as a rule, pretty derivative and badly-made. I no longer rent them, despite their claim at the end of every credit run that the viewer will go out and rent another Asylum Film because "you know you want to."

Nope.

Agreed...

This film was disturbing.. some of the worst acting ive layed my eyes upon.. porn stars act better than this mob...

The story was so thin.. so uninvolving.. it completely detached me from the original..

Ive never been so shocked.. the dialogue.. the camera shots.. the piss poor fx..

it really cant get any more Shocking than this...

granted that the final torture was kind of nasty.. but everything else was so damn poor that the final scene lost all of its impact.. when i wasnt laughing.. i was trying so hard not to fast forward.. or turn this crap off..

unfortunately.. i sat all the way through it..

What a mistake..

This film takes the time of those who give it.. and never gives the time back to those who gave it..

reply

Man up people, the last 10 minutes of this movie completely saved itself, because everything else i watched up to that point was making this shape up to be the worst movie ever, but the last ten minutes made it worth waiting...

I do not know about the bad acting. everyone talks as if eveyone was a bad actor. You MUST admit that the best acting in the whole movie was the WolfMan who growls at Lucy. And the dwarf named Curtis delivered the best lines in the movie. The worst actor in the movie was that actor named Lance who does a lot of Assylum movies.

reply

I have seen this film twice on TV and Freaks once. For some reason my brain is telling me Freakshow is the worst movie ever made, and yet I watch it. At first it brought back memories of being a kid and not being allowed anywhere near the freak shows at the annual tristate fair (kids always want to do what they are not allowed). Anyway, the ending was incredibly disturbing and played on my mind for ages after i first saw it. I think we humans just have a morbid fascination with things that aren't normal... Clowns and circuses freak me out at the best of times... ah well...

if Freakshow bothered you in the least, DO NOT watch 'Salo, or the 120 Days of Sodom'!

i wish i hadn't ...

LOL, I thought I was alone !! I know exactly how you feel. Im a die hard horror fan, and I could sit through all the Saw movies, Hostel 1 and 2, all the Wrong Turn movies, Texas Chainsaw, Cannibal Holocaust, everything! But this one just kept me traumatized for weeks ! Its officially the one movie in the world I refuse to ever watch again.

Agreed. My wife and I were shaken by the ending. I think I was more rattled by it than she was. It was outstanding. I love the mood of the film with the tents flapping in the wind, and the vignettes of the ‘freaks’ lives like when we see them playing cards, or the two girls running and laughing in circles... the music was excellent because it puts us in a time frame with 78 rpm records... the costumes and photography were wonderful too. I love everything about this movie.

And the ending takes you on a 360 turn like a rollercoaster and makes you shudder. It was very disturbing and I’m glad I saw it. If there are people out there who were not bothered by the end, I would worry about them. After a couple of days, I am over it, but that was my limit!
