Would this have been better if John Carpenter directed it?
I don't think so given his work output from the 90s onwards.
Circa 2011 he would have been coming off The Ward (2010) and Ghosts of Mars (2001).
Most definitely. May not have been a perfect film, but the direction in this film is so bland and generic, with the stereotypical shaky handheld camera that pales miserably in comparison to Carpenter's brilliant use of steadycam and tracking shots. Even Ghosts of Mars is well shot, because Carpenter has an excellent eye for visuals.
