Yep, the ending was the weakest part of an entertaining movie.
First of all, I didn't understand why she did the earring side check at all. The fact that he had no earring was reason enough to kill him without saying a word. Well I guess, for the audience.

The Thing imitates PERFECTLY, right down to cellular level, brain patterns, heart conditions - there would have been a hole in the ear and Carter's ablution memories would have told it of the ear-ring.
Perhaps it assumed she wasn't that smart, but I wouldn't have taken the chance...
