NOOO!

Why are they remaking this?!!! The original was amazing, I would not want anything changed.

Here is what you can expect:
-Buckets of blood
-Some Mifune wannabe, who isn't cool at all
-In English
-In color
-Low character development
-Not to mention that any director could even stand a chance standing up to Kurosawa.

It may be a good movie, it may be a fun watch, but it can not equal Kurosawa in any way.

Pretty soon every one of his films will be remade and you can't mention any of them without saying 'You mean that new one?'

Kurosawa was amazing. He was better then Stanley Kubrick or Alfred Hitchcock. I would even go so far as to say he is as good as John Ford. I am sad to see his work butchered.

What are you talking about? They're using the same script and it has Yuji Oda in it, this'll probably pretty good. Maybe some cg blood, but not much if any. The whole idea is to bring awareness of the story to modern audiences. I mean it has been what 50 years?

Modern big budget Japanese movies tend to be fairly good. Here's Hoping its more Twilight Samurai than Zatoichi though.

reply

I hope your right. I'll try to be a little more optimistic.

I don't know man... I've seen Twilight and I've also seen When the Last Sword is Drawn but they are still no comparison to the old black/white samurai movies. I'm still not too excited about this remake but who knows...

reply

there is NO point in remaking this movie. No matter what it will be compared to the original, and it will fall short, i can guarantee that. its in the same ballpark as someone repainting the mona lisa, only now with new cgi color and shiny new and coo.

it should be a criminal offense to remake a kurosawa film.

reply

Agreed, whats worse is the American remake of Seven samurai! I mean it's one thing to remake a Kurosawa film in Japan, but to remake his greatest work in America!
That would be like A Japanese director remaking Citizen Kane. There will never be another Kurosawa or Orson Welles, yet this new generation thinks it can go and btcher their art.

Boycott remade cinematic masterpieces!

By "the remake of Seven Samurai" you mean a recent film, or "The Magnificent Seven", because, dude, that is such a great film!

I guess "The magnificent Seven" can be called a remake (as "Bug's Life" would be too), but the thing is, that they take the story and refurbish it completely.

That is why I see with good eyes the intentions of a film called "The Magnificent Seven" being done so long ago.

But with thios new version of Sanjuro, that looks like it'll be done exactly like the LKurosawa version, I think it is a complete crime.

Cheer up everyone!... We can't do a thing about it.

I absolutely loved The Magnificent Seven, an all star cast, and one of the best Westerns of its time, great score, great acting, great characters. I frequently watch it.

what I have a problem with is an American remake of The Seven Samurai. That would be like a Japanese director remaking Vertigo or Citizen Kane, it just isn't fair.

Kurosawa deserves better, and I for one am going to boycott that remake.

My thoughts exactly, there is no Sanjuro without Mifune, he simply was the character. I don't care who you bring in, Mifune breathed life into the character, and nobody else can.

reply

Zatoichi action, drama, comedy, It was pretty freaking entertaining imo. One of Kitano's best! Twilight Samurai was a good drama, but kind of boring. Sanjuro was not a drama, it was comedy-action!!!

I'm interested to see it, just to see what they've done with it, even if it is a direct copy. Also, how come no one points out that Mifune was in a couple of other movies playing that Yojimbo character, one of which is the worst movie I ever saw (Incident at Blood Pass). In Yojimbo vs. Zatoichi, Yojimbo's character deteriorated to thuggish levels. Just having the wonderful Mifune in a film is no guarantee of a great role. For this Tsubaki I'm guessing that they are casting actors who are very popular in Japan to 'sell' the new version, and since I don't see too much cinema coming from Japan lately, I hope it will spark more interest in bringing more of their films abroad. I'd like to see what kind of actors and films they are producing these days. It's too bad that Kurosawa had so much trouble funding his films, just think how much of his time and talent went to waste on mundane matters such as fundraising his projects when he could have been working on more masterpieces.
