Couldn't watch this
I guess I don't get out much, and I'm not keyed in to the latest in Hollywood pop culture. Can somebody tell me if this series is supposed to be funny? Am I supposed to laugh at a buffoonish/cartoonish psychologist who insists on showing us how ridiculous she is?
In comedy, there are usually such things as irony, pacing and generous slices of sublety. This series has all the sublety of a sledgehammer in the forehead.
I rented this without knowing anything about it. I basically wanted to see what Steve Landesberg is up to after all these years. I still don't know. He has precious little to do, which is unfortunate because he's a terrific comic actor.
The basic premise behind this thing is flawed from the beginning. Here's a woman who's billed as a 'renowned' psychologist, but she's so dumb she shouldn't cross the street without help. After a presumed 10-12 years in university studying to be a psychologist, she ends up knowing little to nothing about the world, gives ridiculous 'advice,' and yet she's somehow 'renowned'. How did that happen? Who would engage the services of this scatterbrain for ONE session, let alone for six years, as I believe Andy Dick's character did?
I admit to abandoning the whole thing after the fourth episode. It was, for me, just really bad and even insulting. When you have to make fun of the mentally handicapped in an effort to get some laughs, you know the show is reaching.
Cheers to others who thought it was hilarious. Vive le difference.
