Too Much Feminism

Although I like the show, I noticed that the creator injects a lot of feminism into the show and push that agenda. For example, Marci making Stu wear that...device so he couldn't have sex with her. She's masculine enough as it is but the woman who hated men and told her to make him wear it was a character I just couldn't stand.

I've noticed that a lot of the women on the show are like this. The 'A' type personality with masculine traits. I'm not sure if it's because it makes for an easy way to create drama or not. However, it can also serve as a teaching tool that women should act this way, and frankly it's characters like these that are responsible for women being the way they are today...way too bold, masculine, man-hating, self-serving, etc.

Yes, it makes for good drama but I worry that women watch this show and think, "This is how I should act towards men."

reply

Women should act any way they damned well please. We're independent with self determination. We make our own decisions on our own terms. If that's masculine, sign me up.
For the record, I don't hate men. I like 'em. A lot.

reply

Independence isn't masculine, but some of the other traits that these women display, are anything but feminine. Not to mention that some of these women are completely psychotic, or rude, or man-hating.

So no...women shouldn't act any way they please. Women wouldn't want men acting anything other than how a man is expected to act so you can understand why men don't want women to display the behaviors I've touched on above.

Women are individuals, not a monolithic group. Femininity needs to be expanded to include women who are strong, opinionated, and not stereotypical.

Men are individuals, not a monolithic group. Masculinity needs to be expanded to include men who are gentle ("gentlemen"), easygoing, and not stereotypical.

reply

no, that's called being human. I hate how feminists turn everything into their issue.

reply

I'm a human being first and a woman second. Women have been denied their right to be fully human for a long, long time. Men have been denied in more subtle ways, but they've been denied, too.

reply

This show is extremely depraved so it comes with the territory, but I tend to agree with you that in general that the women are horrible on this show while the men are constantly put into humiliating circumstances. But I'm not worried about the "feminist agenda" here.

reply

I don't really understand what you are on about.

This show celebrates life and emotions. It shows that you can't just run away from your feelings or *beep* you've done and that everything you do reflects on some individual in another or in the same situation as you.
It also celebrates the (somewhat cliché) california lifestyle; a very liberal, sexual and spiritually guided lifestyle.

Also It's a total sex, drugs and rock 'n roll fest.

Making a remark on a few scenes where the female characters are taking control of the men, when it's been the opposite way around for seasons, is crazy.

I just can't see where it's not equal disregarding sexes. It's people and their actions. Period.

And English is my second language, so I apologize if some of the things I just said can be misinterpreted. :)

You get your point across very well.

reply

Thanks man.
What I'm saying is that pointing this out at all is the most sexist thing about it, this is something that's done a lot of times these days and It's been blown out of proportion a long time ago.

If anything this show is about breaking traditional gender roles and things that are normally expected from adults.

I think all that stuff is done for the drama mostly.

The writers want Hank to be a sympathetic character; a guy with some flaws but generally a good guy, a nice guy, who loves the women in his life. They treat him like crap for the most part, or at least unfairly.
Mia, the little sociopath treats him badly. First she failed to tip him off that she is younger than she looks, and is actually underage, aka jail bait. Then she won't let up and becomes resentful that he won't keep boinking her after he learns she is just 16. And worse, she steals his novella and passes it off as her own, blackmailing Hank to keep his mouth shut about her crime or she will reveal that he bedded her at age 16. Not a good person.

The secretary at his agent's office is kinky and seduces her boss, and later blackmails him by threatening to tell HR that he spanked her and made her do humiliating things (true, but she asked him to do this with her). Very manipulative and dishonest.

There are plenty of women who are just regular people, living life, no major shortcomings evident. But this show does also feature several who are aggressive, dishonest, unfair, even criminal. And Karen and Becca are written the way they are, blaming Hank for stuff he should not be blamed for, because it makes viewers feel sympathy for Hank more, in my opinion.
I have read plenty of posts by people who cannot understand how Karen and Becca could act so mean toward Hank, and also saying how they like Hank.

I think that is the attitude desired by the writers, and the reason so many woman characters in the show are mean, or ball busting, etc.

UPDATE: one more observation. There is too much self pity, victimhood, blaming other people, self obessed guilt, etc. in this show. Becca never stops whining about how Hank ruins her life, constantly screws up, etc. Hank never stands up for himself, takes the blame for all kinds of crap. It is a little nauseating.

What are you on about?
"Feminist" is probably the last thing someone would use to describe this show. If anything, it's the opposite. A lot of people say it's sexist and misogynistic.

reply

I see what you are talking about, but NO one will like those characters. You are not supposed to like them!

On the contrary -this is the MOST sexist show out there! Many women are whores, sluts or otherwise just "there for the taking". Some women let men do anything to hem! I worry that MEN will think of women that way!!!

That's an accurate portrayal of most women in those environments.

reply

The show puts feminist characters on in order to argue against their ideas.
