Does this hold up?

Loved it originally, but I keep thinking about rewatching the series, and I'm not sure why that seems off putting. How is this for a second round rewatch?

reply

Even better then again I've watched it like 5 times so far and every time you notice something new.i usually started watching from the 3rd season on but last time I rewatched the whole series and I forgot how great the 1st 2 seasons were

reply

Do you think watching BCS first would add any additional insight?

reply

No I liked BCS but not nearly as much as BB

In another 20 years it will be as cringe-inducing as "Miami Vice," "Magnum P.I." and '80s TV in general is to people today.

TV doesn't last. Neither does cinema. Books and music don't age well either .... but they age a hell of a lot better than movies and TV. I think that has to do with the fact that books and music leave a lot more to the imagination. TV and movies try to visualize what books and music know shouldn't be visualized.

"BB," in another 20 years, will be worse than the original "Dallas."

But, it will be a gold mine of unintentional hilarity.

Hmmm... this is your opinion and I (like most people I know) disagree with it (among the people I know, some disagree for one or two arts ).

While I might agree that tv series tend to not age very well, I totally disagree for the rest, especially music.

I watched something like thousands of movies and if I look at my top 50, there might be 10 movies max which were made after 2000 and most of them were made before 1990.

reply

I agree. The good stuff ages perfectly well.

Twilight Zone, Dragnet, Alfred Hitchcock Presents are all still solid shows IMO.
The Train(1964) is probably my favorite film if I was forced to pick one.
I like tons of old music, too. E.g. Patti Page, Carole King, Frank Sinatra, Cab Calloway, Buddy Holly, Bennie Goodman, most of the soundtrack for Oh Brother Where Art Thou?, etc...

reply

Especially movies. The Golden Age of cinema was the best. I can watch those movies from the 20's, 30's. and 40's all day long. Way better than those Marvel movies.

reply

I've watched individual scenes or episodes and loved it as much as the first time. I'm thinking about rebinging it myself.

reply

Rewatching it now for the second time and there are some things that don't hold up. When the show started marijuana is portrayed as evil in the show and boy things have sure changed since then that's for sure. But there is a part of the early show that Walt points that out...what is illegal now may not always be...etc. He was so on point with that.

reply

was it "portrayed as evil" , or just illegal?

reply

Evil. They initially portrayed it as some gateway drug and users of the drug were just as bad as users of meth or heroin. It's kind of odd really. Much later in the series Walt has a scene with Hank where he discusses this type of thing basically what is illegal now may not always be illegal etc.

reply

If that was the prevailing attitude of the general public at the time, then it fits within the context of the show.

It think it's more of a mismatch to apply today's social standards to previous eras.

There's nothing wrong with depicting situations and events as they would have been at the time. For example: I wouldn't say that Tombstone doesn't hold up because they're riding horses instead of driving cars. It makes perfect sense given the setting. In the same way, I can't agree that BrBa doesn't hold up because they thought smoking weed was immoral.

reply

Rewatched recently. Holds up fine IMO. Dated a little but can one not watch a period piece? The flip phones tripped me out a little.

reply

I've rewatched it a BUNCH of times. It's one of my favourite shows. I say go for it.

reply

I went through Season 1 again recently and it continues to hold up. In fact, I keep looking for new shows to watch to give me that magic feeling I got from BB where nearly every episode is so well done. I'm still looking.

The writing, acting, pacing and even cinematography are all first-rate stuff and this is one of the Top 5 greatest shows ever in my opinion.
