I'll go back even further and say all Gus' problems stem from his own ego, to hire Walt, to get that extra few percent purity that Gale was pushing for. His initial instincts that Gale's purity level was good enough would have saved him, but he let Gale talk him into Heisenberg grade meth.
Then he allowed Walt to trick him into firing Gale and hiring Jesse, who he knew was a junkie...his next mistake.
Gus had ego problems, just as much as Walt did...and it nailed him in the end, including having to be the one to personally go into Hector's room to kill him, even though he had a "sense" that something bad could happen (like the car bomb).
