walt jr wanting to be called flynn...

So your dad is dying of cancer and because he hasn't really been around you decide to change your name?

And obviously that she-devil Skyler goes along with it.

Is it just bad writing or is it to show that Walt's family just have zero respect for him and seek to undermine him in any way possible?I think its the latter

Just watched it all the way through for the third Tim and I just realised that his family including Marie and Hank are such unlikeable people in general.

I found this a little odd too. I kept expecting this to have some significance later in the show. This sort of thing happens in real life (i.e. a kid wanting to go by another name), but it did not tie into the show.

reply

However, it does certainly add to the humor when Walt's giving Junior his driving lesson...He called him Walt the whole time, which was a bit odd to hear, since he usually called him Junior - but you could tell he was purposely calling him Walt to remind him of his real name...then after Junior crashed into the cones, Walt sarcastically called him Flynn. Good stuff.

reply

Haha, loved that part.

reply

I think its just showing that Walt Jr wanted attention, maybe felt ignored so he came up with this Flynn garbage.
Hank, haha he is a treasure. He always made me laugh.

reply

I think it's also meant to show that Walter has lost all links with his son by the end. He has stopped using the same Christian name, and also the same surname (we are told Skylar is using her maiden name so presumably Junior is as well) and he has totally disowned his father and told him he wants him to die as soon as possible.

reply

Perhaps it's the effect of cancer on the family like how walt sr became heisenberg, walt jr wants to be flynn. Like father like son. Trying to be a new man without cancer in his life.

reply

I never caught that parallel of the two changing their names. It's pretty smart.

reply

Walt JR is also not all the way 'there' and is missing a link in his head, so I found it okay that he wanted the name change.

reply

what makes you say that?

reply

We know why he would say that.

reply

my point is many people who sound like they are mentally challenged , arnt. Stephen Hawking for example

reply

He sure drove like he was mentally challenged. I'll never understand people that can't drive automatic cars. It is beyond easy. I could drive automatic perfectly fine with zero instruction at age 14. Anyone who struggles with it should never be allowed to drive. They are the ones who make driving dangerous.

reply

I actually found it really amusing that you could tell how mad Walt Jr. was with Walter by the name. Some episodes he'd insist on being called Flynn and others he would say or answer to Walter Jr., always coinciding with his up/down relationship with his dad.

He's a teenager. They do stupid stuff like that.

reply

Yup - whether Walter Jr. wanted to be called "Walter Jr." or "Flynn" depended on how Walter Jr. felt about his father. When he hates his father, he doesn't want to be associated with him.

reply

Walt’s family treated him like shit and like he was some idiot even though he’s a genius. Skyler especially treated him like crap and that’s a major reason why he became Heisenberg, he was tired of being treated like some clown,

reply

Why would you watch it through for someone named Tim, let alone the third one?

reply

I know a guy in Jr. High School named Mike McNulty who made everyone call him Clarke. Who knows why, but this show reminded me of that.
