Actor Choice

I don't understand people complaining about the actors not looking like each other or not looking like Brian Wilson. Would people rather they case based on looks regardless of whether they can act? It makes sense to cast people based on looks for a small part, but neither actor has a small part. A poor performance from either would have killed the movie. And if they had cast by looks, people would be complaining that they can't act. There is no winning. Anyway, just my 2 cents.

I agree, yet the filmmakers say that Dano and Cusack did indeed resemble Brian Wilson during the period that each of them portrayed him. His looks changed quite a bit from the 1960s to the late 1980s.

Make a choice, to take a chance, to make a difference.

I think it was an artistic choice. The film is a bit Avant-garde for a biopic.
Maybe having to very different actors portray Wilson was meant to illustrate the immense changes, physically and mentally, caused by the abuse from the doctor.
