Love & Mercy: An Unfocused Biopic with Great Potential

“Love & Mercy” is a very well-intentioned film, attempting to explore two important times in the life of singer/songwriter Brian Wilson, but unfortunately it plays as two distinctly separate films that are on two different levels of quality.

Asking the audience to accept two very distinctly different looking adult men playing the same person is a bit much to ask of the audience. If you're going to have two different actors you can't also move from the past and future so often without it impeding with the story's plausibility.

The movie focuses on two aspects of the same thing.

In the sixties period, the success which Brian's talent and drive brought made him a hostage to people's expectations. Including both those wishing to limit expectations to that which brought the success and to his own expectations to grow and progress. That tension and alienation of his ambition from his responsibilities as a leader added to other elements of his life and family led to Brian's life spiraling out of control.

The later period shows how the vehicle for Brian's survival replaced those elements but the loss of control over his own life and his own talent persisted in the process. Because of the process, in fact.
