Paul Dano for Oscar.

Paul Dano was fantastic. He physically changed to become Brian Wilson.
He deserves an Oscar for the his work in this film.

I wished they'd just aged him up to play the older Wilson. Flipping back and forth between Dano and Cusak ruined the movie for me.

It was a bit of an avant-garde way of telling a biography. It didn't take me out of the movie. The artistic purpose of having two actors was to illustrate how much the illness and abuse physically changed him.

reply

That was a cinematic device. The idea is that Wilson is not the same guy now that he was then, leaving viewers to want to know what happened.

The director accomplished this by having Wilson literally be a different guy in the flashbacks. Not every viewer likes this device, but it could have been worse. In some films, they don't even try to make the two performances gibe, as if your older self is literally a complete stranger to your younger self. I admit that those movies lose me, too. (Not my experience of growing up; doesn't seem realistic.)

But in this case, the two actors weren't completely dissimilar, and their performances were very compatible. Since both concentrated on incarnating Wilson - one from archival footage, the other from current sources - and Wilson is in fact one guy, it worked for me.

Good perspective! It's hard to pull off what they did, but it worked.

reply

He was terrific. The Supporting Actor category is so crowded that I hope he doesn't miss out on an Oscar nomination. He thoroughly deserves one.

reply

I don't think he will. Nobody is talking about the movie that much for him to get an Oscar nod which is a shame because he deserves one.

reply

Paul Dano got some less well-known awards but really deserved better. This film is often sad but his performance was terrific and Elizabeth Banks' acting was excellent as well. It was only in the theaters briefly; well worth the rental.

reply

Totally agree. A much better film than I expected. Dano's performance should have been better acknowledged; he was amazing.

Just saw this movie, and seen all of the actual supporting Oscar nominees, and Dano should have been nominated. Easily over Ruffalo, and winner Rylance.

reply

Agreed

reply

Agree! I thought Cusak was great also. He really nailed the older Brian. There's something very sweet, innocent and childlike about Brian, and I thought he really captured that well.

reply

Agreed, i think Cusack is quite underrated in this.

reply

Dano should have taken the spot Rylance got. It was a much more effective and memorable performance. I felt some real anxiety watching his episodes and he really makes you feel how trapped he felt himself. I credit the director and cinematographer as well, because you really do feel anxious along with Dano.
