Giamatti stole the show.

Paul Giamatti was a great supporting actor in this film. His character was despicable, but I found all of his scenes to be intriguing. If this film wins just one award, it should be for best supporting actor.

No question Giamatti is the best actor in this ensemble. But remember, without Cusack playing Brian Wilson, Giamatti would not have had a role. And if this movie had been about the 1960s Beach Boys then Giamatti would not have had a role!

In the scene where Melinda brings matzoh ball soup over for Brian, Giamatti played his character in a very THREATENING manner which was so UNDERPLAYED. He was calm, but the threat was there. Then when he came to the dealership where Melinda worked, he was a raving lunatic outside her office until she finally came out. He completely MELTED without her having to say a word!! 😎

What also sticks in my mind is the scene were Landy will not let Brian eat a hamburger, and gets really pissed when Brian sneaks a bite.

Landy is kind of like Nurse Ratchet. At first you have to respect his authority as a psychiatrist and assume he cares about Brian, as he gives up so much of his time for Brian. And Brian is a little nutty, after all. Like Melinda, you eventually reach the conclusion that Landy is doing more harm than good.

Pig Vomit rules!!

Of course Giamstti stole the movie. He had the best lines as the villain of the piece. It was a gimme.

That role highlighted his strong points as an actor.

He made me want to take a shower, what a sleaze!

Hell, man, he even stole the show as Cora's ne'er-do-well brother in Downton Abbey (season 4, I think it was).

Giamatti is just brilliant.

I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness, starving hysterical naked.

I'm a big Paul Giamatti fan, but, to me, he played the character as a Paul Giamatti character, which means I've seen it before. I didn't think that was Eugene Landy on the screen.

reply

Even Brian Wilson said it remined him of the real Eugene Landy.

reply

Check him out in "Billions", he's brilliant there too. Oh and "John Adams".

reply

Oh and "John Adams".

John Adams is to Giamatti as Patton is to George C Scott.

Some people would think that's overstating it and I agree that the Patton is an epic of a different scale then the Adams mini-series. But G's performance as Adams was so great, so believable, that if I could ever meet the real life Adams I'd be expecting him to look, sound and behave like Paul G's character.

I've always loved Giamatti in everything I've seen him in....except this film. Playing against type, he was never convincing. I just couldn't believe in his character. He was acting, and it showed. That's one thing an actor should never do is show that he is acting.
