how has this got 6 stars?

for a horror/comedy this movie made the fatal mistake of not being scary or funny. Very much a let down, i love low budget h/c movies, but this was so lame.

reply

Yeah, this was pretty dreadful. I gave it 3 out of 10, and I feel I was being very generous.

reply

Right question, wrong answer?
This movie should be ranked higher, I mean this movie was a better homage to evil dead and the like, then even that hack of movie drag me to hell was, and that one was made by the creator of Evil dead.

Great Cast, funny, interesting story; theres really nothing to dislike, i suspect if you didnt like this movie you were looking for the wrong genre.

reply

I don't see everyone's problem. I thought it was quite entertaining, very well shot for the budget it had, and the monster makeup (while it should be the least of all concerns to a fan of true horror, not just a kid with a "Fangoria" subscription) was more than adequate.

Do people really not want to see movies with odd structures like this? Does it have to have constant excitement and laughter for a movie to be considered "good" for you people?

OP said it made the "fatal mistake of a horror comedy"; who is saying they wanted to make a straightforward horror-comedy? Why must it fit your genre constraints?

Just asking. I liked the flick, mostly because it didn't try to be anything but itself, and did a wonderful job at that.

reply

Meandering script combined with terrible monsters and really bad makeup. I was not impressed at all.

I dont know as opposed to shaun of the dead, which has an old script rehashed with comedic elements and not particularly stellar monsters either, yet that one is considered even beyond a cult hit. What about that piece of junk, forgot the name, the movie that ripoffs of the exorcist and combines it with blair witch. That movie has a worse script and is very painful to watch in terms technical aspect, yet that movie made 100+ plus. Considering the movie probaly had an infinitesimal budget, the monster looked fine with me. And wtf do you mean meandering, it was a story told as flash backs, which has been done many times, it was fairly short, and the scenes were told chronologically. Either you are to dull to follow a flashback, have ADD to an unheard of level, or you are throwing around big words nonsensically.

reply

You obviously don't understand the meaning of the word I used. Look it up in the dictionary. It was very episodic and meandering. It needed a lot more focus. Anyway, it was still very meh.

13tongimp - you have no idea what meandering means, i'd take another look at your dictionary if i was you. Episodic and meandering are completely opposite things.

Uhm, you are dead wrong because you miss my meaning.

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/episodic

"1 : made up of separate especially loosely connected episodes"

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/meandering

"1 : to follow a winding or intricate course"

I meant that it is a loose collection of events that aren't tightly connectly and it goes all over the place. In that sense the words are both useful descriptions of this film. A story like this is both episodic and meandering at the same time.

But they are tightly connected. The "episodes" are the vignettes that chronicle the procession of Blake's relationship with Grimes. They proceed in chronological order, separated by the framing device of Blake and Murphy in the cell.

I'm very curious as to what movie "rips off the exorcist and blair witch." I've been thinking quite hard about what movie you may be referring to, but I have no clue at all.

If you could perhaps remember the film or anything about it, ie. year it came out, actors in it, or maybe a slightly detailed plot(I assume demon possession with documentary style camera work).

Hope you can help me out, thanks in advance.

....Peaches killed Jeff?

reply

I think he was referring to Paranormal Activity, but I could be wrong...

reply

yeah, this movie was neither funny or scary. i was expecting it to be a little like army of darkness with the comedy and horror but it really came off as a movie i would expect children to watch on nickelodeon around halloween time.

reply

I agree. I gave it a 4.

reply

What were you expecting.. one of those dime-a-dozen "lol zombies! Let's all grab our chainsaws/shotguns/etc and get at it!" movies like Shaun of the Dead? It's a dry humor, might not be to your liking.. but I thought it was very funny and fun to watch. Obviously not some people's thing, but I think a 6 sounds pretty fair.

reply

I want to see this...

Killing people is easy...if you can forget the taste of sugar.

I haven't seen this movie, but I may check it out when it comes to DVD. I personally don't trust the Horror film IMDB ratings very much anymore. This movie has a low rating (Anything below a 6.2 is usually bad IMO) but then a movie like Trick R Treat has a 7.1 (A very good score IMO) and that was one of the most terrible films I've ever seen. I was already using the last shreds of my willpower to finish it and then that little pumpkin kid came on screen, and I was done. And don't even get me started on Drag Me To Hell, wow that was awful.

What's there to hate in this movie? I actually gave it 8. Good cast, beautiful story and it really made me laugh, especially the scene in the island!
As for the "not scary" argument, it's so obvious that it wasn't meant to be scary despite its name.

reply

I agree. I enjoyed this movie. It's done in a style that perhaps doesn't play well to a modern audience but I definitely didn't feel I had wasted my time watching it.

reply

it was not amazing, but i quite enjoyed it, glad i bought it. the extras on the blu ray are pretty good to. I liked the visual syle, it could do with a sequel. to be fair it could have been made into a quite good bbc mini series, to expand on the characters further.

I came into this film with high expectations and a like of dry humor films. I was let down on all cylinders by this movie. First of all it looks like an episode of Goosebumps. In some scenes the green screen background is so bad that it looks horribly cartoony and very choppy around the outlines of the characters. The whole whenever something was about to happen it turns into a graphic novel looking sketch got very old fast with me. The story is very simplistic and at the times when it decides it wants to pull a few laughs out of you, it tries to do it in a very dull way. The whole look and feel of this movie has an "ABC Family Halloween Special" vibe to it.

reply

green screen wont be choppy around characters :/ makes no sense

If you don't like British black comedy, you'll hate this movie .. if you dig British black comedy, you'll love this movie ... i gave it an 8
It is NOT "ha-ha" funny ... but then no British black comedy is ... nor is it scary, but I don't think it's meant to be.

reply

are you people *beep* me? This was very entertaining and filled with solid dry humor. Even with the tiny budget I really enjoyed it. I'm usually really hard to please when it comes to movies too.

reply

you just have to consider the audience and chalk it up to simple minds happy with being spoon-fed drivel. This is an enjoyable film, certainly.

reply

@eleudean- I did not like this movie and I am not simple minded nor do I like sub par movies that spoon feed predictable boring scripts to the audience. I just felt that the movie was poorly handled and could have been improved upon greatly.

reply

Well it's not exactlyt a horror/comedy, you're to square for this type of movie, go see saw or something.
