What happened with the game?

While reading the book I started visualising this game as an RPG in the tradition of Final Fantasy. You travel the world in an attempt to overthrow the villain, your party grows with several different characters as you battle monsters along the way, often facing a boss. You can buy new weapons and items in the towns. Melee weapons, magic, dramatic storyline, a character's death here and there ... It's all there!

So why did they decide to turn this into a hack and slash?

Now THERE'S a game I'd buy.

Unfortunately the Eragon video game was a game that was based off of a movie, a popular movie, and as such was doomed from the getgo. Every time a popular movie comes out that's directed at a younger audience the studio feels the need to put out a vidogame to go with it. Probably because they feel that the game could reach some kids that the movie it's self wouldn't and in the end will draw them into the theaters. As result they don't invest much into the game title.

An RPG would require longer voice cast sessions with the voice/actors, more dialog and a proper writer for it instead of just stealing some lines here and there from the movie, and investing more into location artwork (Interiors for item shops, houses ect.). Whereas a Hack'n'Slash requires basically very little work on the art department, a small number of refreshing enemy sprites, and a few obstacles built into the levels.
....So I guess your final answer would be....Profit is the reason why they turned it into a Hack'n'Slash.

Of course I have to admit it was a FUN Hack'n'Slash, as I've played it a lot. And they did pretty good on the flying mechanic, but they could have included some more...
